Stylish yet practical waterproof coat?

I am in desperate need for a new waterproof coat. I am looking for something warm, but not too thick as I run hot so will layer up underneath if it's cold.

I would like:
Proper practical hood (not one that neither is too small to keep my head dry nor too massive and floppy as to make it impractical)
Something practical enough for dog walking, but will also look reasonably smart for school run.
Something that can be easily cleaned/chucked in washing machine as needed (no dry clean only!)

Colour-wise I would prefer a plain colour rather than patterned. Not black. Something like khaki/grey/brown. Or wouldn't object to bright jewel colour.

Any leads/brand suggestions welcome.

Would spend up to £200 for the right coat.

Think the issue will be the washing. Truly waterproof stuff hates being washed, which makes it tricky to keep a dog walking coat smart. Following in case it exists!

You can’t beat Regatta coats, especially for value. I size up so they are a bit longer, mine is 5 years old and is still completely waterproof.

Mine is similar to this

Seasalt!

Can highly recommend protected species!

Another vote for Seasalt. We get a lot of rain in Cornwall, so their coats are nearly all waterproof. I have one of these coats, it’s warm enough for winter without being too hot like a down jacket would be. Nice cosy fleece hood. I wear this everywhere. They’re currently £180, but I got mine in the post Christmas sale a couple of years ago.

I love my Protected Species jacket so much I recently bought a trench coat too.
For me they're not warm enough for this time of year though, living as I do in a cold part of the country.

I came on to say this. Their sale might still be on? I have a raincoat in Storm, which is a sort of purplish grey. It's super stylish, lovely material, and I get loads of compliments on it.

They come up big enough for a thin fleece underneath though.

Rain sisters, probably from eBay /vinted, they are beautiful & very waterproof. I live in mine & really want another 😍

CraftyNavySeal · 09/12/2025 21:43

Uniqlo blocktech. Looks nice and you can add layers underneath as needed.

NomDePrune · 09/12/2025 22:05

Seasalt. On my fifth (different styles/colours, have overlapped) - all waterproof with big drawstring hoods, multiple pockets, washable (not sure about proofing). Sales are worth waiting for.

Queenage · 09/12/2025 22:09

I love my seasalt Janelle - fully waterproof, warm, proper hood, zips right up, inside pocket. It’s pretty perfect and looks as good as the day I bought it. It’s not edgy but then again I’m not edgy either 🤣

OldMaaa · 10/12/2025 09:31

Thank you so much for all the recommendations, I'm off to Google now. Lots of brands I didn't know existed.

I may need to compromise on the washability, I hadn't really thought about that logically when I posted. I suppose I could get two cheaper coats - one for scruffs and one for when I don't want to look like a bag lady.

They also do one which is fleece lined! I have this and with a hat and gloves it's great.

Another vote for seasalt or didricksons.

That's really cute! I suspect it might make me look enormous though.

I think I have settled on a Seasalt coat. They're doing 20% off at the moment for new customers.

Wondering about the fit... Their fit checker is telling me to get a 12R. Do they come up big or small generally? I would want room to put layers underneath depending on how cold it is.

Seasalt sizes are on the upper end of the size bracket if you see what I mean. So, they def don’t come up small, and if you’re a 14, then you’re a Seasalt 14. Perhaps buy two different sizes and send one back.

I should have followed this advice. I ordered the Janelle in green in a 12 (based on their fit check thing). It arrived and although it fitted, it was snug when zipped up. So that's going back...

However, there's a silver lining as I found the same coat in "Mast" (a bright blue - the one colour which was sold out at SeaSalt) on another website. So I have ordered that in a 14 and will hope that's a better fit, and the colour is as nice in person as it appears online. The dark green was nice enough, but perhaps a bit drab/dark.

I am now going to be looking out for a thinner SeaSalt rain coat in the sale or on Vinted as they do seem like lovely well made costs.
