Help finding a skirt to wear to a black tie event

I recently bought a strappy black velvet top from & Other Stories which I love: https://www.stories.com/en-gb/product/strappy-velvet-top-black-1293834001/. I've worn it out with trousers a few times and it works well.

I've got a black tie event coming up and nothing to wear for it, and I was wondering about pairing this top with a skirt - but I'm not sure what kind. I'm quite pear shaped - 8-10 on top and 12 on the bottom, so would prefer something that keeps the focus on the top half rather than clinging to my slightly chunky thighs ... maybe A-line? What length would work - maybe below the knee?

I'm not great at this, so any suggestions would be very helpful!

So many of these look like underskirts/slips and would be very unflattering.

The maxi with pockets further up is far more forgiving of a pear, especially with fabulous shoes. Because then the eye goes from the top straight to the feet.

And its a beautiful skirt that can be worn in so many ways with the right accessories.

I think the slip skirts won’t make you feel dressed up enough with a vest top.

I always recommend Metamorphoza. They have loads of dramatic skirts

Just in case you fancy a sequin midi, there’s plenty on Vinted at various prices

New with tags MaxMara gold, straight shape

A-line rose gold Pure Collection

and about a million others!
