Philips Lumea

I'm thinking of taking the plunge and getting this as I'm fed up of shaving. Just wondered if people could share their experience of the Lumea. Does it work? Does it hurt? Do you get soreness or red skin afterwards? How long does it take? I am light skinned and have brown hair. I have PCOS so I have lots of quite strong dark hair especially on my upper thighs and a bit on my stomach too 😫

What do you do with moles? I have a few on my legs. Would I need to cover them? Also, does it work on the face? I have a bit of form dark hair on my upper lip that I'd love to get rid of for good!

It worked really well for me (fair skin, fine dark hair). I followed the directions and did it every two weeks for a few weeks and in the 2-3 years since then, I’ve only needed very occasional maintenance. Wish I’d done it years ago!

LongOutBreath · 05/12/2025 11:27

Following with interest!

I have hair in several shades, and pale skin. I understand it would get the black hairs and not the blond ones..... what about the mid brown ones?!

notamorningpanda · 12/12/2025 17:03

@PlanetSaturn thanks that's encouraging! Does it hurt? Did you use it on your face too or just legs?

I bought one about 5 years ago now and I think it’s great. I have dark hair which it works best on. I don’t think it hurts particularly but more sensitive areas are, sensitive I guess. A bit like being zapped or twanged.
I use mine mostly for face and armpits and my hair growth is v fine now and I only top up with the lumea. I’m pretty hairy and its been a great investment for me and the only thing that’s really worked.

SoScarletItWas · 12/12/2025 19:00

Love mine! I am pale skin with dark hair, so the best combination for best results. My hair growth is really fine now.

I use it everywhere except face as I don’t have hair there.

Yeah it pings a bit, like snapping an elastic band against your skin. Nothing you can’t deal with.

I have moles. I try and work round them, getting the zapper (technical term) as close as possible without actually placing it full over the mole.

Doesn’t hurt me in the slightest - I wouldn’t even say it pings. I did upper lip, underarms, bikini and legs.

notamorningpanda · 12/01/2026 10:37

Thanks everyone! My lumea arrived last week but I've not used it yet.... I think I'll start with my lower legs! Feeling a bit nervous about it.

It absolutely does work, it’s all about keeping up good habits to get the results. And I bloody fail at that 🤣

DecktheHallswithCireTrudonSpiritusSancti · 12/01/2026 10:39

It's brilliant, doesn't hurt at all and works very well. I do everything with it and have never had any issues.

Hope it works well for you - get into the habit of setting a reminder for it as you need to charge the battery/use it every three months or the battery will fail.

Tallypoo193 · 12/01/2026 10:55

It's been completely life changing for me on my once very hairy legs: worth every penny. It's taken a few more sessions than the instructions suggested but after 12 months (I've settled on doing it three weekly; they suggest monthly as maintenance), I now have almost no hair on my legs. This is after 40 years of daily shaving (sometimes bleaching or waxing) and always long skirts and trousers because I struggled so bad with razor rash and ingrown hairs.
It takes me just short of an hour to do two full legs very throughly. I download an podcast then the time flies. Armpits and stomach are much quicker, just a couple of minutes.
I bought a corded one which is fine but I do notice that the flash rate gets slower as the machine heats up.
It doesn't hurt apart from on sensitive areas where it feels like being pinged with an elastic band; then I turn the intensity down a bit.
Interestingly , it didn't seem to work well on my face despite dark lip and chin hair. A shame, as that would also have been amazing. I have given up there but maybe should try again.

Yes, take time to do it thoroughly, and either download the app or set a recurring reminder on your phone to remind you to keep to schedule.

LadyDanburysHat · 12/01/2026 11:00

Completely life changing for me. Dark, fast growing hair and pale skin. Had to shave underarms and legs daily. Now don't have to do them at all, and no stubble by afternoon.

Rosesarere · 12/01/2026 11:00

I love mine, been using it for 4 years and only get reallg fine re growth now. I do maintaince maybe once every 3 weeks

LongOutBreath · 12/01/2026 14:40

What's the difference between the various models available? The "cheaper" ones are still very expensive.

weareallqueens · 12/01/2026 14:48

Another one who wishes I’d bought it years ago. I live in skirts and shorts in the summer now. I tend to top up a few times in about March / April for the summer. Also good on the face, although I’ve some wiry white hairs now which it doesn’t touch. 😡

DoorOpening · 12/01/2026 14:55

Be persistent and patient, and you will get your results. It’s so good!! I used mine on legs and armpits. I found it more painful around bikini line and etc so I dialled down the intensity so it just takes a bit longer.

I got a cheaper model after seeing discussions on here that there is not much difference. I also got a corded one as saw something about needing to keep the battery charged correctly on the cordless or it dies.

teaandtoastwouldbenice · 12/01/2026 15:37

It’s brilliant - I had mine for about 9 years. For some reason didn’t work on underarms but the rest of me was smooth! Best thing was no ingrown hairs or bumps/rashes.

The battery has gone on mine - it was a basic model and I got it in a Boots sale for £85! Even the cashier was surprised. I’m going to splurge on the newest version now because it really is worth having (and I want to try the newest version facial attachment!)

Tallypoo193 · 12/01/2026 20:17

I am happy with my corded one. I can't see that a cordless one that I had to charge would be better.
i avoid moles as much as I can, or cover them with white eye pencil.

momager22 · 12/01/2026 20:27

Worked brilliantly on me, wish I had brought one 25yrs ago it would have totally changed my life! I’d say it’s got rid of about 80% of the hair on my legs, would be more if I could be arsed to do again.
never used it on my face as my facial hair isn’t that bad.
sometimes when it’s been on a while and gets a bit ‘hot’ the zaps start to hurt in certain places (armpit/ groin) but I just turn it down or let it cool and start again.

id definitely recommend if you have pale skin and medium - dark hair they’re super effective.
not sure if it works for PCOS specifically though.

momager22 · 12/01/2026 20:29

Sorry didn’t realise this was an old thread op - let us know how you get on!

It doesnt give the results you really want with hormonal hair growth. I have PCOS and now menopause, face and chin hair had gone wild. It keeps the top lip under control. and keeps the time between chin/neck hair removal to every few days

However, leg and under are hair - barely noticeable. If we had a boiling day tomorrow Id happily put shorts on even though Ive done no body hair removal since maybe September

muckypuppyducky · 12/01/2026 22:15

Has anyone used this to do a full Hollywood? I am tired of ingrown hairs and want a solution (but cannot afford laser treatment)

weareallqueens · 14/01/2026 21:41

Ooft. Think I’d be a bit scared.

DecktheHallswithCireTrudonSpiritusSancti · 15/01/2026 08:17

Yes I've done it and it's fine.
