Hair frizzy after 30 mins!

eyespartyparty · 03/12/2025 13:22

Why does my hair do this? I blow dry it after using a bit of heat protector and serum, it looks fine when I’m done and then….boof! About half an hour later I’ll be walking past a mirror and it is frizz-tastic!

If I apply any more hair serum/oil etc it turns greasy immediately (it’s quite thin) so I have no idea what else to try.

Help!

You need to strip your hair of sulphate first - find a decent shampoo

Then of you want it straight find a straight type conditioner

SparrowFeet · 03/12/2025 18:21

The strands are too dry so any whiff of moisture they're opening up and absorbing that moisture and then POOF - I know as I have it too.
You need to treat your hair with a decent deep conditioner that's right for your hair type, and use lighter products that will keep it from frizzing without weighing it down.
Have a look at the Blowdry professor on YouTube; my hair has been so much better since following his instructions.

UpToonGirl · 03/12/2025 18:55

Similar here. One thing I try and do if I'm blow drying is to make sure I take my time and that my hair is actually dry, I've noticed hairdressers take a lot longer in drying but get longer results. Obviously theres a balance as you also don't want to dry your hair and make it worse!

eyespartyparty · 03/12/2025 19:08

Thank you for the tips!

Silvertulips do you mean a sulfate-free shampoo? I use a shampoo bar at the moment which is sulfate-free.
Would have to check my conditioner though, I sometimes skip as it goes greasy quickly the next day so this might be my problem.

Sparrowfeet I rarely use a deep conditioner as it goes lank and greasy quickly, but maybe I’m in a vicious circle!

I will look up blow drying too, to see if maybe I’m not doing it for long enough?

Why is it such a short jump between dry/frizzy/greasy!!!

I have to make sure my hair is completely dry. The bit around the crown at the back seems to take ages to really get dry. I then clip it up in one of those big hair clips or tie it up in a silky scrunchie. That seems to calm it down. Going out with freshly washed hair is not great on days with any dampness so better to wash it the night before.

SparrowFeet · 03/12/2025 20:50

it sounds like you are indeed in a vicious cycle @eyespartyparty- it's the products you're using. You should be able to condition your hair without it going lanky. If it's getting too greasy too quickly you're not washing it well enough.
I do feel your pain though - it's such a fine balance! Humid weather my hair won't stand a chance, but I do think it's better now than it used to be.

Looked on YouTube, just checking is it the Blowout Professor ? Don't want to use the wrong guy! @SparrowFeet

Yes that's the one @tobee !

FlibbertyGibbitt · 04/12/2025 15:23

You need to also watch for glycerin in your hair products. That makes mine goes like candy floss !!

eurochick · 04/12/2025 16:09

It could be the texture of your hair rather than the products you are using. My hair is very porous (and I haven’t used products containing sulphates for years). Any bit of moisture in the air makes it frizz. This time of year I won’t set foot outside without tucking all my hair inside a hat.

Try a leave in conditioner but rinse it out.

OP I had this!

I dye my hair with home box dyes and it made my hair so porous that it just frizzed up once I set foot out the house.

I was speaking to a friend about it who said if your hair is very dry (or porous) then it will suck up any moisture it can from the air, thus making it frizzy!

I did some research and I have a fool proof method now for my hair:

Clarifying shampoo

Bond repair shampoo and conditioner

Keratin hair mask - every other shampoo and on top of the bond repair conditioner. Because this is a lot of conditioner I don’t use the bond repair shampoo when I use the hair mask. (Got too greasy!) I just do clarifying shampoo, bond repair conditioner, hair mask.

I’m out at the moment but will take photos when I’m home.

Edit: Not saying this will work for everyone but worth a go?

WearyCat · 04/12/2025 18:37

A good hairdresser can test to see if your hair lacks moisture or lacks protein (apparently both can cause frizz).

My hair is curly and VERY dry, and I found an amazing cream from a tiny maker called Leafology (I bought it at a festival). I use it when hair is starting to become frizzy and she told me I was using too much but my hair just drinks it up!

I also use Curly Girl Curl Creme and Gel when I wash my hair, I sleep in a satin bonnet and I have a silk pillowcase. All these things have, together, made my hair so much better that I quite like it for more than one post-wash day nowadays!

Dontevenlookatme · 04/12/2025 18:58

I use a tiny bit of light serum on wet hair, then blow dry to 80% and finish off with straighteners and a large round brush. I’ve found this is the best way to prevent frizz and it will last me several days. You need to smooth the hair shaft so there’s nowhere for the moisture to get in.

Fiftyandme · 04/12/2025 19:15

I have this issue too - very fine hair that frizzes easily. I’ve found clarifying shampoo once a week followed by argan oil conditioner by ox, Noughty leavd in conditioner and then olaplex oil. Then the second time in the week I wash my hair I use a co-wash followed by the argan oil conditioner, and at the weekend an all Vera deep conditioner goes on and is left to dry and rinsed out Sunday night when I start again with the clarifying shampoo.

Sleep in a silk cap. Add a little more Olaplex every day in between washes. Massive improvement

Oh wow thank you all so much, I didn’t get a chance to log on today and I have a lot of reading to do!
I do use box dye about every 4 weeks to do my roots! So there might be something in that.
I am going to read properly and get some new products in my shopping basket.

Really appreciate the tips 🙏

In all honesty, I'm lazy. I find once my hair is dry that if I tie it back for a few hours it settles down.

Merrilydancing · 05/12/2025 06:42

I have been using a bond repair shampoo and Wow dehumidifier lotion and that has really worked. So happy now as for years it would be a frizzy mess within minutes of stepping outside.

I have lots of highlighted fine curly hair which is bomb proof in damp or humid weather when worn curly but hard work to keep smooth when I straighten it.
I have fine tuned a routine that will last me up to a week between washes.
Shampoo with clarifying shampoo, I use Olaplex or Redken, shampoo again with moisturising shampoo, I use either Redken All Soft or the Kérastase one in the white bottle, can’t remember what it’s called, follow with conditioner, I leave it on for 10-15 mins. I use K18 every 3rd wash followed by Redken 20 different uses leave in spray, Redken frizz dismiss serum, then put damp hair in large Velcro rollers, blow dry and leave to cool completely before straightening then adding a little Olaplex oil to the ends. I use Olaplex No 3 once a month. It’s a long drawn out routine but works really well on my super frizzy hair, if I’m lucky I get a week between washes so the effort is worth it.

WhatDaHell · 06/12/2025 07:39

Apple cider vinegar shampoo and conditioner from OGX is so good. I use it once a month to fully cleanse and it's fantastic at refreshing the hair. It really helps to keep my hair smooth. And just adding a couple-few drops of good hair oil to quite damp hair mids and ends before drying. Then using Mark hill hair lab heat protection spray - unreal and devastated it's now discontinued 😭 but you can still find it at inflated prices online.

And then a bond treatment once a month (for me it's important to not overdo this step, once a month is enough). Again I used ogx full bond treatment range (apart from the serum which I hate). I've used many expensive brands and find that the OGX range works as well on my hair, but everyone is different. Occasionally I'll go back to something a little more expensive if I feel like it.

For the weeks in between same routine but with a gentle cleanser and nourishing conditioner . Making sure you create strong tension on the hair as you dry and can always clip the sections in place after drying so they fully cool to make the blow-dry last.

I have to use a straightener on my hair after, otherwise it doesn't last as long (if I don't use hairspray). So use a straightener to smooth any areas that need it.
