Help with top or dress for depressingly low key Xmas do

ChristmasHug · 01/12/2025 00:12

We used to have fabulously glitzy work Christmas dos, everyone made an effort, I loved it. Team expanded rapidly over covid with mainly young men, the winning vote for Xmas would be a pub crawl but mercifully we have to do something 'inclusive'.

We will work in the morning, go to some activity in the afternoon (bowling, crazy golf, etc), then a meal at a cheaper restaurant (pizza express level) and then a pub for drinks for anyone staying out.

There is no expectation to dress nicely, most of the men won't bother at all. Us 4 women usually make a tiny effort of the jeans and a nice top variety.

Im not sure the back story was needed but now I have your sympathy can you help?

I am 49, 5'6, very much an hourglass, size 10-14 depending on fit and need something fitted between boobs and waist to avoid looking pregnant. Either a top to go with dark jeans and flat boots or a long sleeved midi to wear with tights and ankle or knee boots.

I'd love something a bit christmassy, velvet or with a bit of sparkle. I suit Christmas colours, burgundy, red, teal, deep green, look awful on black.

Have you seen anything? I'm not a fashionable shape and not catered for, and my do is on Friday!

Ignore black top - mistake!

Koolandorthegang · 01/12/2025 07:25

Similar Christmas party to my work one. I got this top https://www.very.co.uk/the-very-collection-velvet-cutwork-top-burgundy/1601148262.prd

I’ll wear it with palazzo jeans and pointy boots

in either colour goes well with jeans.

No help with your clothing dilemma I’m afraid but can I join you in mourning the death of the Christmas party?!
my work is the same - we used to do great parties, meal out somewhere nice and dancing and everyone got dressed up. Covid killed it, and the team are now wider spread geographically (still commuting daily). This years ‘party’ is takeaway pizza in the staff room at 5pm followed by a beer in the pub round the corner with people expecting to be on the train home before 7.

Try Collectif -

Their dresses are very comfortable and incredibly flattering on curvy figures. Depending how much time you have, you could also pick one up on Vinted: they used to have velvet versions of this dress (I own several). Very Christmassy, without being OTT, can be dressed up or down with tights.

Dress with boots. Take you anywhere. The dress could be velvet or cord or knitted and the boots keep it more casual.

Edited

Agree with this.

ChristmasHug · 01/12/2025 12:09

Thank you all, loads of good possibilities from places I don't usually look. Might get a few.

And thanks for agreeing that this is not everyones idea of a Christmas party!

You may already be sorted but I had to add this jumper for you because you're exactly my height/size/build by the sounds of things and this is so much nicer on than you'd think. Also, apparently knitwear is the "nice top" to be seen in this year. I'm wearing this with my good old ribbed black velvet M&S leggings but it would also look fab with cigarette trousers or straight jeans.

The 10 is perfect on me by the way.

Edit to add - I think I linked the neutral but meant the red one

That looks cute, @PuppiesProzacProsecco - but surely it won’t survive the first wash?

Graciously · 01/12/2025 19:18

My go to is a velvet jacket with jeans and boots. Got a red velvet, blue and a green one too!

RappelChoan · 01/12/2025 20:38

Fuck it just wear a dress and bollocks to the miserable lot of them. Be Moira and let them be Schitts Creek.

How depressing! (Similar story for me. I skip anything like this!)

Mind you, I'm used to low key Christmas parties. One place I worked we always went for a lunch as it was cheaper than the evening, so people just went out in their jeans, and then most of them spent the rest of the day drinking in the pub. Really dull and not my thing!

Don't see why it wouldn't? The embellishments are stitched on so should be fine on a gentle wash I'd imagine.

Fabulously low key but lovely dress instead of wrong blouse:

https://justinetabak.co.uk/products/edie-dress-in-rosewood-corduroy

I love this but th price is yikes!

Talipesmum · 02/12/2025 00:15

I just bought a chocolate brown velvet shirt for low key work lunch. There are a few around, mine was next but sold out now, there are a few Yumi ones on there.
More luxuriously there are these velvet tops by NRBY eg this:

CharlotteStreetW1 · 02/12/2025 04:19

I'm not sure why we're only going to a restaurant for our do either, but I'll be wearing this:

https://www.next.co.uk/style/su959939/w14270

I'm 5'5" and it comes to my knees. I don't know where "blue" comes into it as it's very definitely a lovely forest green.

MsOtisReflects · 02/12/2025 05:55

@LucyLoo1972 - have you see the shaping and stitching of the bodice? And the fact it’s 100% cotton? And completely Made in England (so no economies of labour)?

If anything, I think it’s underpriced. Greedier brands might double the price.
