Accutane - private prescription

My daughter is struggling with acne at age 25 for first time. Has been bad for a year. GP is referring to dermatology for potential accutane prescription but has suggested wait may be months. Has anyone any recommendations on how to get a private prescription & how much it may cost. Thank you so much.

If the private dermatologist needs a referral you can get a copy of the NHS one from your GP, but the two times I've needed roaccutane I've just booked straight in. Consultation was around £200 and the prescription and drugs were quite expensive too, but so so worth it.

Thank you for such a quick response How did you find a good dermatologist?

I asked my GP to refer me privately, but I was covered by my work health insurance, so don't know how much it cost. I was in my mid 30s when I took it, and honestly, I would have paid ££ if I didn't have insurance. It changed my life.

It's not an easy drug to take, and your daughter MUST NOT GET PREGNANT while she's taking it. It does awful things to the foetus.
I had horrendously dry skin, including in the inside of my nose and my lips, and you can't go in the sun, but I took it for about 9 months I think, and I'd do it again. I don't need to because I'm now in my 60s, and haven't had acne since.

No chance of pregnancy yet - I just suggested she ask the doctor for a private recommendation as they will probably be happy to get her off the nhs waiting list! I just want a good recommendation that she can trust. I’ll be paying but it will be worth it if it works, don’t want to see her so unhappy.

We paid about £250 for an appointment ( every 2 months) and the cost of the medicine ( 2 months’ worth was about £65. We struggled to find even a private consultant who wasn’t booked up for weeks, but found one in the end who was lovely and allowed my (gay) daughter to opt out of the pregnancy prevention plan which saved ££. We had health insurance but it won’t cover her for acne as she’s under 24. I suggest you look on the websites of private hospitals near you and connect the dermatology consultants’ PAs directly.

This is a great time of year to do it as it makes your skin really vulnerable to the sun so get cracking.
