I'm going out tonight, with glam friends, I'm a fat bird with no money to buy new clothes - can you help?

Everyone else always looks so glam when I go out with my friends
I'm a size 18, short and dumpy. I'm broke and can't get a new outfit to make myself feel better
I always end up trying too hard in these situations and end up looking dreadful (city shorts and knee high boots anyone? - wasn't a good look!)
So, any suggestions? I know I can't tell you the entire contents of my wardrobe and you're not physic so this could be tricky, but general suggestions would be gratefully received

Give us your colours.
Hair, skin colour, norkage etc.

Mamazon · 09/06/2008 11:15

the best way of looking glam is to be understated imho.

pair of nice black trousers and a smart top...or even a little vest top with a little cardi ( you know those bolero type ones)

don't go for loads of lairy make up either...i always find that some ladies tend to go overboard on eyeshadow that they h aven't applied very well and it just ruins an entire look.

TeriHatchetJob · 09/06/2008 11:15

Less is more HM.

Best thing is to feel comfy in whatever you are wearing.

How about something simple - black trousers and a simple top and jazz it up with a bit of oversized jewellery and a nice bag.

Anyway, your friends won't be interested too much in what you are wearing - they just want your company.

nailpolish · 09/06/2008 11:17

do you ahve a nice pair of black trousers and a tailored black shirt, black stilettos and a pair of bling earrings?

HonorMatopoeia · 09/06/2008 11:20

Sorry (busy filling a bath with cold water and salt - trying to get blood out of a duvet (nosebleed!))
I'm blonde, very pale skinned, huuuuge norks, 5'3".
Have black trousers but no black shirt I'm afraid.
I know my friends are lovely and won't care if I wear a sack, but I just feel soooo dowdy.
Will look out statement jewellery!

I'd go for something like these
with this
and these

nailpolish · 09/06/2008 11:25

whatever you do dont wear a t shirt

you will feel dowdier than ever

wear something like a fitted shirt

and a scarf or bling earrings

and HEELS

HonorMatopoeia · 09/06/2008 11:26

I Love those wedges!
I think I can do a variation on that theme NBG, thank you

If you are large of nork then go for a plain rather than patterned top

great shoes

good hair

ninedragons · 09/06/2008 12:36

Nailpolish is right - fitted, fitted, fitted should be the plump woman's mantra.

High heels and big jewellery? (as accessories, obviously. I am not suggesting that that is all you should wear.)

I know you're skint, but for next time, I would consider making a small investment in something that makes you feel fantastic. You could get a very nice Monsoon top (nobody cuts better for boobs) in some sort of dark purple or green for 10-20 quid on eBay. Sell everything you don't love to fund a couple of things you do. You are better off having six pieces in your wardrobe that you really adore and feel great wearing than 40 that are only so-so.

jeangenie · 09/06/2008 12:42

I have two friends who are bigger than you - they tend to wear fitted stuff, in great colours, patterns etc with good accessories and often look far better than anyone else there when we meet up

agree with the fitted mantra

have a lovely time

Nbg · 09/06/2008 12:54

Fitted is good, but not always.

I think what I linked to is perfect for this kind of weather.
Light, floaty and will fit in the right places.

All you need to add is a big long necklace to glam it up a bit.

jeangenie · 09/06/2008 13:01

would you say never two parts floaty though nbg? like fitted top and floaty trousers or floaty top and more fitted trousers? I think two parts fitted can work but not two parts floaty (sounds like recipe for icecream sundae!)...this is what I try to stick to anyhow as am no stick insect myself and find if I do floaty all over I feel like a baby elephant...

how about your city shorts, some pumps if you have any and nice top?

lizandlulu · 09/06/2008 13:07

or heels if you wear them. i only said pumps cause they are what i would wear as i cant wear heels.

Nbg · 09/06/2008 13:33

Yes I suppose one fitted one loose.

But I think those trousers will most likely be fitted at the top and flow straight down and the top will fit the chest nicely.

Wedges will give a bit of height and slim the leg.

I dont know about anyone else but I hate fitted clothes in this weather.
They make me want to rip them off and hose myself down

jeangenie · 09/06/2008 13:45

don't get me wrong NBG I thought your outfit was v good : fitted ish top and floaty trews...(have awful headache today so can't do any work and so am wandering around style and beauty where I am not normally found trying to pick up inspiration!)

Honor, when I clicked on this thread you are the last person I expected to have started it!

On our meet-ups you have looked gorgeous and stylish. You may have huge norks but you wear them well .

I remember the first one after you had DD2 you looked great -miles from that exhausted new mum look most of us have had at that stage.

Believe me, you will look great

HonorMatopoeia · 09/06/2008 14:56

Betty, you are a star!
Thank you x
