Bleach blonde turning orange within a week

I’ve always been blonde (not natural) I’m mouse brown naturally but the last 20 years I’ve always had it highlighted blonde. I’ve been bright platinum blonde, darker blonde, etc. My hair always lifts really well & easily.

the last 6 months however it keeps going almost orange. Even within a week of having it done. I’ve tried toner, no toner, purple shampoo, black shampoo, clarifying shampoo. I did change my anxiety medication which my hairdresser thinks could be the issue but having googled it it is highly unlikely. I’ve also been on Mounjaro for 12 months but as I say this has only been within the last few months. I’m getting frustrated forking out for colour that just keeps going orange. Hairdresser doesn’t seem to think it’s anything he’s doing but has said If it does it again (it has) he will use a higher peroxide. Anyone had any experience of this?

Do you mean it's going blonde at first and then turning orange?
Are you in a hard water area?
Have you tried blue shampoo or toner? (Blue neutralises orange tones)

barrrrometer · 25/11/2025 20:45

@dementedpixie yes exactly that. Goes blonde then orange. Not in a hard water area though. I’ve never actually heard of blue shampoo, I thought there was only black & purple. I will have a look for a blue one. Thanks so much.

Try fudge clean blonde shampoo, you can get it from Amazon.

You need a toner.

In the event that's not possible - Fanola shampoo.

Do not put a blue shampoo on bleach blonde.

Blue is the 'opposite' to orange, so the theory is there but I'd also be worried about blue taking too well on bleached hair. You could end up with blue or brownish hair!

It's possible there's too much red in the violet toner you've tried. I'm assuming your orange is more of an orangey yellow? Violet does neutralise yellow, but you may need more of a bluish violet. I sometimes use Directions dye for this kind of thing - it would be much safer to discuss with your colourist! If you go back with your orange in full flare, he might mix up a corrector that you can then take home.

Mine did this. Happened on my extensions too so I know it wasn’t just my hair!

i have bleach blonde hair and this is a constant battle - I spend so much time re-toning it. Purple shampoos do nothing - plus they’re drying. I use Shrine Drops to re-tone, but it’s a faff as, at best, it lasts one wash. Looking forward to just being a lovely white/grey all over and being done with bleach!

This has been happening to mine too, especially near the roots, but after a month or so.

I’ve been getting blonde (bleach) highlights for 20 years. I trust my hairdresser, she isn’t doing anything differently, she uses a toner, and I’ve tried everything suggested, including purple shampoo. Neither of us know why this is happening.
I’m in my 40s, so maybe it’s yet another joy of changing hormones?

Happening to me; home dye same dark ash blonde- just touching up roots- which I’ve used for years. In the past 6 months its been turning coppery. I thought it may be my natural hair going greyer and taking the dye differently. Blue toner didn’t work. Maybe whomever is manufacturing the dye or developer chemicals has had a formulation change…
