Washed Down jacket in the washing machine, how to unclump the down?

I got second hand North face Nuptse jacket, badly stank upon arriving.
Says washing machine washable on 30 degrees or less.
I put it on specific Down jackets program, sadly even the lowest spin it had was 800.
it’s obvious clumped, the down inside, big lumps of down stuck together.
I have no tumble dryer, already checked with friends too.
At the moment it rests on towel but how to fluff it up?

Ok, so as suggested I put it on a lower Spin in the washer with the plastic lightweight practice 3 golf balls,

You might want heavier balls - maybe borrow some.

It needs to be throughly dry before you do anything. Put it over the back of a chair and close to the radiator and then have some patience. Then when it’s dry - might take 24/48 hours- try all the things that people have suggested. It is totally fixable. You have to trust the process.

Does your washing machine have a spin function? If so you could use that with tennisballs, I know on ours the spin function doesn’t add any water to the machine.

I already did this 2x today. No helped.

Do you mean it will be still warm jacket? Chat gpt says all ruined now, it won’t perk up and will stay flat..

I have done it loads of times. What have you got to lose you've already washed it. Just let it dry thoroughly and shake it about. Chat GPT doesn't have real life experience.

CaptainMyCaptain · 25/11/2025 17:14

Don't dry it flat on a towel. Let the air get to it.

We haven't got s tumble dryer. Down jackets will fluff up when they're dry. Just give it a good shake. It will be fine.

This. We haven’t a tumble drier. I wash down coats and gilets loads. Usually hang over a radiator giving it a shake every now as it’s drying and then and then a massive one once dry. The clumps sort themselves out. You think it’s ruined when they first come out of the machine then magically it just all settles and goes back to as it was as it dries.

nightswimming1 · 25/11/2025 17:35

Hang it over a radiator or similar to dry then shake it out.
It will be a far better result if you find a laundrette somewhere for a tumble dry — there will definitely be one somewhere even if your local one closed — but you don’t sound keen so you won’t get the best result I suspect. Should be wearable though.

Uniqlo have a step by step guide on how to wash down coats and how to plump up the down .

namechangeformeeee · 25/11/2025 21:40

Mine managed to be fine with drying next to a radiator with vigorous shakes every half hour or so!

Lorrymum · 25/11/2025 22:48

Washed mine in the summer and thought it was ruined as I pulled it out of the machine. It looked like a sack of clumpy wet feathers. Once it was completely dry and shaken every few hours it was fine.

Catloverss · 26/11/2025 08:15

Update. I hanged it on a wide hanger and near the radiator on yesterday’s evening. During the night it was hanging freely on a hanger on a clothes dryer horse.
Today’s it seems a bit fluffed up, not everywhere yet, but I keep giving a hard shakes every hr or two..
Thanks everyone for advice..

Great! I can remember the first time I washed a down coat and panicked as it looked completely ruined but after a few days it fluffed up again. Oh the relief!

Toddlerteaplease · 26/11/2025 14:59

I let mine air dry then give it a really good shake. Takes a few days.

Oh ye of little faith! We told you it would be fine!

I'd probably unpick areas of the lining, reach in rearrange the down and sew the lining closed again!

What? Don't do that. There is no need.

I have no tumble dryer, my friends neither and no one near me.
The local laundry shut down a year ago.
It’s still well wet. But has huge lumps of down. The sleeve is totally empty, with all the down down at bottom.
tThe back is the same.
Its all ruined, ready for the bin..
Its says No dry cleaning on the label.

You don't need a tumble drier - the jacket has to be completely dry. Spin it again on the highest setting on you machine, then put it somewhere to dry, it may take a few days. when it's close to dry, start shaking it as if it was a duvet. Keep doing this until you're sure it's dry. The filling should plump up and settle properly if the section stitching is still intact.

Gekeos · 26/11/2025 19:22

Turn the water off your spin cycle and pop it in with dryer balls.
