Losing hair after pregnancy.

I've always lost more hair than your average Joe, and used to scare my hairdresser something rotten when I got it coloured,
BUT since I had DS2 (8weeks ago) my hair is falling out LOADS.
When I brush it get a full brush of hair, when washing I get handfuls of it, and even running my fingers through my hair I lose a good few hairs.
I seem to remember it happening both times I had Dc's before but can't remember if it was this much.
Has anyone else had it?

I lost shed loads after dd2, was constantly blocking up plugs in the bathroom . It went on for a while too, am back to normal now and Dd2 is nearly 8 months!

My hair is falling out steadily and DS is coming up to six months.

I have no advice, just empathy!

At least I'm not the only one.
I have a hairdressers appointment later and I know they are going to freak out!

I'm going through the same thing and LO is 20 weeks old. Have constantly got hairs on my tops which is annoying and if LO grabs at my hair he comes away with loads which I have to grab off him quick before he puts them in his mouth.

I am drinking magnesium loaded mineral water - it makes me feel as though I am doing something constructive; cannot say has helped though.

VictorianSqualor · 09/06/2008 09:59

LOL.
Is magnesium meant to help then?
What's the science behind the hair loss?

What happens is that during pregnancy your hair follicles tend to "hold onto" the hair for longer, so your hair gets thicker. Then after the birth your hormones change and a lot of te follicles decide to "let go" of their hairs at the same time. I had this and it freaked me out at first, but the doc was very reassuring and explained it! She also said if you're nervous about it, get someon to look at your scalp and they should be able to see all the new little hairs starting to grow, to reassure you that you won't end up bald.

MrsTittleMouse · 09/06/2008 10:03

The general deal is that you don't lose much hair when you're pregnant - the hormones extend the life cycle of each hair. So when you deliver and the hormones go back to normal all those hairs that would have normally been shed in pregnancy all come out at once.
I hated it, and I used to have to sweep sheets of hair from the floor to avoid clogging the vacuum. It is growing back, but now I have a load of fluffy shorter hairs ruining the style. Not that I'm complaining about the growing back!

It's because during pregnancy you loose very little hair because you have all those hormones coursing through your body. Once it stops and all your hormones crash back to normal, all that hair that would have fallen out, now falls out. It will all regrow but you may have a noticeable regrowth as the new hair grows at the same time. I had a significant fringe, all exactly the same length, of new growth for a while.

Yes, it seems to be a common problem. Mine stopped falling out when I started taking my pregnancy multi vits again, but this may just be coincidence.

A lot of my hair fell out around 4mths after. It was very noticeable around my hair line and temples, luckily I have a fringe so it wasn't too noticeable.

It grew back quickly though, but it was very strange for a month or two as if I brushed my hair back I had this very short sprouty fringe effect.
