Good morning all .
My closest friend is very much into '40s and '50s fashion and proper old school glamour .
She's had a shitty year .
I want to buy her a fabulous ,classic fragrance for Christmas .

And which of those has remained unaltered since its creation, @Tomatocutwithazigzagedge?

Was that what the op requested?

FredaMountfitchet · 24/11/2025 22:39

Miss Dior (original) in the houndstooth box . Hard to find nowadays .
John Lewis might have it.
Shalimar is way older than 1950s but is gorgeous .
It’s a ‘fur coat and cigar ‘ perfume .

Pollyanna87 · 24/11/2025 22:42

Another vote for Shalimar. I would have suggested Joy by Jean Patou, but sadly I think it’s no longer made.

Also, Bal à Versailles.

77Fee · 24/11/2025 22:48

Agree with the Miss Dior but only the original. Such a lovely scent.

Depends what sort of notes she likes in a perfume. Today I’m wearing Femme by Rochas, which is a gorgeous 1940s chypre by Edmond Roudnitska. My mother used to wear it. It’s discontinued I think but you can pick up a bottle online for about £40, which is amazing value.

Otherwise, the classic Guerlains are lovely, especially Mistsouko and Shalimar.

They ruined Mitsouko when they reformulated it about 10 years ago.

PotassiumPermanganate · 24/11/2025 22:55

Flair. Just the thought of it takes me back to the early 80s in a smoky stuffy bus station with my mam in her corduroy jacket and her box of tic tacs 🩷

L Air du temps...
Created in 1948 to celebrate the end of WW2
Its wonderful and the glass falcon with the dove of peace on top is beautiful

Miss Dior certainly hasn’t. It was my absolute favourite, I loved it. Sadly it is no more.

I still like it. Likewise I still love Coco Chanel (the original) even though it was much better in the 80s and 90s when my mum wore it

The extrait de parfum is still beautiful but hard to find and £££. The EDP is probably the best option. I wouldn't touch the modern EDT.

borntobequiet · 25/11/2025 10:29

Get her a voucher. You don’t know what will smell nice on her.

I love Guerlain perfumes, but not all of them suit me. I’d be annoyed if, for example, someone gave me a bottle of Mitsouko, because it smells awful on me.

You could go shopping with her so she could try them.

I would do this too. I love perfume but there are plenty that make me queasy. I would LOVE a voucher to spend on perfume.

The new one is horrible, nothing like the original.

Hoolahoophop · 25/11/2025 12:00

I was given two sets of mini's last year. Nice to try out some different scents. A lot of the big names do them.

Nagyandi · 25/11/2025 18:06

A very special present would be a session to create her own fragrance with London perfumier Floris. A bit pricey but if a few friends get together it’s a special enough present that you won’t regret it!

Floatingvoting · 25/11/2025 18:31

Coco Chanel or No 19 - both stone-cold classics

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 25/11/2025 18:34

My mum's smell all through my childhood (70s/ 80s) was YSL Rive Gauche perfume, so that's special to me and I remember it being lovely.

I've always disliked Chanel No. 5 but each to their own! A classic case for me of a thing being designer not necessarily equating to it being pleasant or beautiful to the eye 😂

Eau Dynamisante has been around for ages, but it's a bit of a marmite smell.

My favourite classics from 90s/00s are 5th Avenue and Boss' Deep Red. Kenzo flower too.

Ctu24agent · 25/11/2025 18:36

I can’t believe no one has mentioned jpg classique. That hits all the floral.. and I’m always complimented on it.

Probably because it's a quintessentially 90s perfume and OP has said that her friend favours mid-century fashion and glamour.

Diorella
Diorissimo
Chanel No 5

Portrait of a lady - Frederic Malle. The end.

Madisnttheword · 25/11/2025 19:03

Caron perfumes are beautiful but pricey

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 25/11/2025 19:44

Ma Griffe by Carven and
Vent Vert by Balmain

are both perfumes first sold in the late 1940s. I don’t think either of them is available any longer, I last wore them in the Eighties, I think. Loved them both.
