Anyone else suddenly questioning their haircut after years of the same style?

I have had the same shoulder length, slightly layered haircut for years. It has always been my safe option because it is easy to manage and never looks too dramatic, but lately it just feels a bit flat and outdated on me. It does not seem to suit my face the way it used to, and I notice it every time I catch my reflection.
I keep thinking about trying something different, maybe a shorter cut or even a fringe, but I lose confidence the moment I remember a couple of bad haircuts from the past. It is strange how a small change can suddenly feel like such a big deal, and it has put me off booking an appointment.
At the moment I am just saving photos of styles that appeal to me and trying to work out what I might actually have the confidence to go for when I am finally ready.

I have a friend who has always, since a toddler, had hair down her back. Now, due to thinning hair in her 50’s, she’s had it bobbed and it really suits her. In fact she commented on how she wishes she’d had it done years ago.

I’m feeling like that at the moment. I’m torn between getting my slightly outgrown bob sharpened up, or going for a baby mullet. The mullet looks like what we called a feather cut back in 70’s!

Yes, me too.
I have what I suppose is a bob just above shoulder level, though it's more shaped at the sides and I have a fringe. I've had this style and length for around 15 years and I think it generally suits me as I look better with hair mainly away from my face.

However I'm planning to grow it quite a bit and cut some choppy layers into it. I have thick straight hair so without at least a little layering it ends up looking like curtains just hanging each side of my face.

Also, having let my grey grow out a few years ago after decades of dyeing (I went grey very young), I'm going to add a little colour to it, probably a very light brown. I loved my grey hair initially and was glad to get off the dye treadmill, but the novelty has worn off and frankly I'm just fed up with it. I find the thought of growing and colouring it quite exciting!

Good luck with whatever you choose to do.

I get this so much. It is funny how a haircut can feel like a huge decision even when it is just hair and will grow back. Sometimes you look in the mirror and the style you have had for years suddenly feels wrong. Collecting photos is a good start because it gives you time to see what you are actually drawn to rather than rushing into something. When you do feel ready, even a small change can make you feel refreshed without going too drastic.

I've recently changed stylist after fifteen or so years with the previous one. I've had more or less the same style for fifty years, but it has gradually evolved as I have changed. New woman has cut it slightly shorter, softened it a bit and it looks fabulous.
