Water flosser recommendations please

Trixibell1234 · 23/11/2025 16:36

Looking for recommendations for a water flosser please. I’ve tried looking up reviews but would love some recommendations from people who’ve used them.

I would be especially grateful to hear from people who use them who have braces (or know of people with braces). Thanks

I've had a few Waterpiks. Started with one with a built in battery- good while it lasted, but once the battery stops holding charge there's nothing you can do. So the next one I got took normal batteries - I use rechargeable and they need changing once a month. It's fine, and good for travel because there's no need to pack a charger. But for home use I've now updated to a mains powered one and it's a world apart - much more power, and no need to refill the reservoir half way through. It's also easier to manoeuvre because the wand is just a wand, not a combined wand and water tank.

Even the first one made a massive difference to my gum health, but I'm particularly pleased with the latest one.

I have had both this cordless one and this corded one.

Both excellent. The cordless one’s battery has lasted for years. I upgraded because my new bathroom has a shaver socket by the basin and it’s nice not to have to refill the tank.

Just a word of warning because I loved mine until it took out one of my fillings! Those things are powerful. My dentist said they'd seen a few people reporting the same issue.

That's the one.

I was going to get one until I found out what dentists think of them. The basic message seems to be ‘beware’. Apparently, they can damage the gum, sometimes causing gum necrosis 😳 They can also push bacteria further into the gums. They recommend that we learn how to floss properly and stick with that. That is what I have decided to stick with. I have had two dentists in recent years and they both say my dental health is excellent.

IPromisedIWasntGoingToDanceButIMight · 24/11/2025 14:46

Interesting comments - it was my hygienist who recommended I get one. Mind you, she was leaving.

FourBlackCats · 24/11/2025 14:51

I don’t think ‘dentists’ are one giant hive mind who all think the same thing. My dentist and hygienist are both very happy with my routine which involves a water flosser (plus floss and interdental brushes).

Trixibell1234 · 24/11/2025 15:13

Thanks. My main motivation for looking at them is that my DS has just got braces and they’ve really hammered home that his teeth need to stay in good condition for them to continue treatment. I’ve paid a fortune for the braces. He’s very good at looking after his teeth. Just trying to look for ways to help. Thanks all

Fair, but if you look at studies in the dental industry, water flossers said to only be used with great caution, or not at all.

HouseAshamed · 24/11/2025 16:01

I bought one in Lidl. I've never used it. Probably because it needs to be plugged in.
I've had Sonicare toothbrushes in the past and the batteries would go after about 13 months. It was a long time ago.

I got the Philips Sonicair cordless 3000 which was the Which? recommended cordless one at the time.

I'm in two minds about it - technique is tricky unless you enjoy being waterboarded. I'd say interdental brushes are just as good. My dentist was quite pro water flossers.

apremoiledeluge · 24/11/2025 19:11

I got one from Lidl as it was cheap enough to give it a try. It plugs in. I just can't get on with it and it sits in the bathroom shaming me silently but I refuse to waterboard myself in the name of dental hygiene. It's back to regular flossing for me.

NotPennysBoat · 24/11/2025 19:25

Waterpik is the brand to go for, there’s a couple in the Amazon Black Friday deals. Don’t be tempted to go cordless because they are nowhere near as effective, and really cumbersome to use!

ProfessorBinturong · 24/11/2025 22:49

Cordless are useful for travel.

FinallyHere · 25/11/2025 19:21

Waterpik. Plugged in

i got it in the Covid years when dentists were closed so I couldn’t have my usual three monthly scrape and polish. Don’t use it as regularly but my dentist now says I only need an annual visit to the hygienist. Floss, toothbrush, waterpik.

sorted.

My daughter has braces and the waterpik bothered her. We switched to Philips Sonicare Cordless Power Flosser 3000 and we love it. It has 6 settings and you can get three different attachments, traditional, gentle or four way. She said it works better than the waterpik for her. I have one too and love how clean it makes my mouth feel. I hated my waterpik and never used it. I use the sonicare twice a day.

ProfessorBinturong · 26/11/2025 12:37

The Powerflosser has been discontinued.

The Powerflosser has been discontinued.

I think they have just discontinued that model. 3 others are available

That’s really interesting. Could you give more detail on why you prefer it to the water pick?

Topseyt123 · 26/11/2025 13:16

I had a cordless waterpik as the first model I bought. It didn't last a month before it would no longer charge so I changed to a Philips Sonicare 3000. Also cordless.

That was over a year ago and the Philips is still going well. I love it, and love how clean it makes my mouth feel. I find it very difficult to use floss or the Tepe brushes except on just a couple of my teeth so the water flosser works best for me. My dentist recommended it too.

I recommend using warm water in it because cold can set off any sensitivities you have (as I learned the hard way). Warm is much more comfortable and I have no problems with that.

Sometimes the waterpik is too harsh and can make her gums sore despite using it for years and having really healthy gums. The sonicare sprays in multi directions so it gets around the brackets really well and cleans them better. Because it is not a direct spray it is gentler and cleans more areas at once.

She was resistant to changing at first but after using it just once she was hooked on it and loves using it. Everyone is different, but she has tried about four different kinds of water flossers and feels this one cleans the best for her. She is really fastidious about cleaning her teeth and braces. I don't have braces but like how clean my mouth feels when I use mine too. I even got my DH to start using one and he hates water flossers and flossing with a passion 🤣
