Anyone reacted to a hair dye test after years of hair dying?

I’ve had to change hairdressers and went to the obligatory hair dye test to today. I’ve been getting my hair dyed for decades, bleaching for the last 10 years. Not long after she put it on I could feel it burning a bit, not uncomfortably so but enough to notice. I took it off an hour later and it hurt to do so. This evening I’ve been mindlessly scratching it which hurts, there is a small red mark but not much tbh.

Anyway, I assume this is a reaction and I need to tell her (not on Saturday night!) I’m just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and if it’s likely to be a new allergy or just the brand she uses? I would be gutted to have to stop! I do often find the toner part of my appointment burns a bit but that’s all.

Take an anti histamine to try and help.

I'd been having my hair coloured for years when I had a terrible reaction in the hairdressers. It was rinsed off by a saturday girl (she was very quick as they were busy) and by the time I got home an hour or so later, my head and neck was on fire. I ended up having to see a GP the next day, as it was so painful and they said it was a chemical burn.

Never had colour again after that, not worth the risk. It took about 3 weeks to fully clear up.

I'd been doing a box colour on my hair for years without a problem. During the covid years, I read that people were having a reaction to hair dye after they'd had covid. I started religiously doing patch tests (hadn't bothered with them as always used the exact same product/colour). Lo and behold, a couple of weeks after a covid jab I had a reaction to the test. I left it a couple of months and tried again and fortunately all was well. I now do a patch test every time now though, regardless of the product.

I have had this happen after years of having my hair dyed. I ended up having to go to different hair salon as I seem to be ok with Aveda and Wella, but not with L'Oréal

I didn’t react to a patch test (for a toner) but started taking an allergic reaction to hair bleach last year.
Strangely, it was a skin reaction on my face, hands and arms but my actual scalp was completely fine.
After it was clear that what’s the cause my hairdresser would not touch my hair whatsoever.

I had a reaction a couple of years ago - turns out it was the new medication I'd started. Are you on any new meds?

qqwwkkssvvg · 23/11/2025 09:53

Thanks all. No not on any meds. It’s really frustrating. It’s fine now but obviously don’t want to risk all over my scalp.

Sorry for the very extreme examples given here but I had remembered that Sali Hughes had developed an allergy which was very serious when previously she'd been fine, so was trying to find the article.

That was what I thought of too. Can’t believe how long ago it was! It’s really stayed with me, sounds very scary.

I became allergic to hair dye, allergies can start at any time peak time is during peri menopause for new allergies. My Dr told me after I became allergic to a few products during this time.

tobee · 23/11/2025 19:36

Yes me. Very similar to your experience op. Aveda also seems to be ok for me. I'm currently totally natural colour which is grey and I keep umming and ahhing about changing it up.

tobee · 23/11/2025 19:39

I think that the answer to the article is that ppd works with regards to permanently dying your hair.

You'd have thought hair dye manufacturers would have come up with a safer alternative and I daresay they are trying hard.

Having lost a friend to (home) hair colour allergy who didn’t patch test as they’d used the same one for a long time - patch tests are for a reason.

Yes I got new allergies after peri started so makes sense that hair dye reactions become more common too.
