New reading glasses

I've got slightly stronger reading glasses but I think they are too strong. If I use them for reading it's OK, but when i sit at my laptop the screen is blurred because computer screens should be an arms length from your face. My old reading glasses are less strong and I can see my screen properly. If I move my face very close to my country.puter I can see to read things on the screen.i wish I had never got the new glasses because there is no way I can use them at work because I just can't see what I'm looking at on the computer so I will have to take them back and just use the old ones. When I had my eye test the new lenses made me read a bit clearer but they are no good for the computer

Even looking at my mobile phone with the new glasses dont look as sharp as the old ones which is a shame beause my new glasses are lovely and smart. I will have to phone the optician tomorrow. I may just get the strength of the old glasses put in the new frames be ause the old frames are very bent and really not wearable anymore

Glasses for reading need different lenses than for computer. You either need varifocals or 2 pairs ... or a compromise lens that gives you a reasonable situation with both. Sounds like your old readers!

PencilsInSpace · 21/11/2025 20:13

I think this is just the way of things as our eyes get older. You can probably get varifocals which will incorporate both strengths.

I just buy cheap ones in two different strengths. I have slightly weaker ones for most of the time - they're best for the computer and OK for reading, and a stronger pair of half lense glasses for doing close work like crochet or embroidery - half lense so I can watch TV over the top of them.

There are lenses designed to give the computer distance at the top of the lens and closer reading at the bottom ( occupational lenses - not a full varifocal). You could talk to your Optician about those?

I've tried bifocals before and I hated them. I could not get used to them so I told the optician to give me two seperate pairs of glasses which I prefer. The old readers were fine so apart from the bent frame they suited my eyes. The other concern is that I need a scan of the back of my eyes which I usually have but myt usual optometrist was booked up until next year so I saw another person who said if I did not want the scan she wo do it. That doesn't sound right to me

I've also got blepharitis and previous optometrists said use warm water to help clear it but this one said use blepharitis saches as warm water won't help. I wonder if she's just trying to sell me the sachets. I also clean my glasses with tap water. I never buy cleaning spray. I dont trust this optometrist.i also wanted my eyes dilated but she said no not needed. FFS it's my eyes abd I want a proper examination for peace of mind especially as ive got nacular degeneration

The optician should ask you what distance you want to be reading at. This distance will affect the lens prescription, as the further away you want to read, the more magnification you will need.

If your glasses don't suit, then you should go back to the optician to get them checked,

I thought about this myself. You could try wearing shades when using the device, perhaps a cover protctor may help vision. You could also adjust the brightness setting on the device.

I have intermediate glasses for computer use. As they are only for work, my work paid for them too. Yours should as well. Reading glasses are no good for computer screen use. You’ve obviously not got what you need at the moment

I have different glasses for reading, for computer work & for driving / watching the tv / big screen at work. This was not always the case
