Which shampoo after keratin treatment?

Hi, I tried adding to my original thread but no luck

What shampoo do you use after a keratin treatment, please? It's confusing because when I google, I find lots of things that look like a sulphate free but they have salt or something instead. I'm looking for something not too expensive. Because I won't have any money left LOL.

I was actually wondering if baby shampoo was a good idea Thanks

I’ve been having keratin treatments for years. Used various shampoos and have never noticed any difference whether it’s the ones they sell in the salon or one I get from boots. I don’t buy really cheap ones but not £20 a go either. Think im using L’Oréal at the moment.

Huckleberries · 20/11/2025 16:28

@TorroFerney thank you
Do you know which L'Oreal?

I see the glycolic one is claiming to be sulphate free, but I'm confused because I would've thought glycolic acid would break things down

I don't want to pay a fortune for smooth hair and then spoil it by mistake!

Also, do you use conditioner? It occurs to me that if water is what breaks it down, maybe conditioner isn't a great idea.

I can get away with not using conditioner most of the time to be honest. My hair is in good condition. It's just weirdly fluffy and frizzy.

I do exactly the same as I’d do if I didn’t have the treatment. Apart from I don’t use a hair mask so Philip Kingsley elasticiser or olaplex as my cuticle is lying flat so not as much frizz. It’s the L’Oréal full resist.

TorroFerney · 20/11/2025 17:30

Pressed send too soon. Can you spoil it by mistake? You wouldn’t be able to undo the chemicals if have thought with shampoo? The shampoo they recommended prolongs it I they say but I never noticed.

Huckleberries · 20/11/2025 20:09

@TorroFerney thanks that's interesting

The advice seems to be that you have to get an SLS free shampoo but I've always used shampoo with SLS in it so I don't have anything lying around

Then I came across information saying that it has to be salt free and free of other things

The hairdresser herself has said any sulphate free will do, but I thought I'd ask here.

you can spoil a lot of things with shampoo, I think. I didn't realise that my volumising shampoo was removing my hair colour too quickly until three cycles of root colouring kind of disappeared which they shouldn't really do.

Faith in Nature shampoos are SLS free and are inexpensive. Available from Holland and Barret.

GameOfJones · 20/11/2025 21:43

Faith in Nature mostly have salt in them though, although the conditioners are often OK. I'm usually the grapefruit conditioner at the moment.

Check out the Sukin colour care shampoo and conditioner OP. I usually use that and get my keratin straightening treatment every six months. The right shampoo and conditioner definitely help maintaining it because I could easily go longer between treatments if needed.

Sulfates are easy to avoid but salt is trickier. Sukin or Head and Shoulders bare are my go to.

HouseWithASeaView · 20/11/2025 21:43

I used NYK1 sulphate free shampoo & conditioner which I get from Amazon. It’s currently on a Black Friday deal.

Huckleberries · 20/11/2025 21:49

Thanks, everyone

I nearly went for the NYX one but opted to stick with herbal essences sulphate free instead

It feels like there's a lot of conflicting information about

I had heard that it was permanent, but googling seems to suggest it's more semipermanent

The lady in the salon really wasn't trying to upsell anything so she said to me that if I like it, maybe I'll want to do it twice a year. Looks like a lot of people are doing it more.

Also, some people seem to be in the salon for hours, I've been told to allocate 2.

So that's tomorrow! Thanks for the advice. Never spent so much money in a hairdresser in My life!

I have keratin treatments and really do notice that the effects don't last as long if I dont use the right shampoo and conditioner. They should be sulphate and sodium chloride free (Google all ingredients as some are named differently!) to protect the hair. I use https://www.amazon.co.uk/VALQUER-Intensive-Hydration-Softness-Capsules/dp/B074CRFKRS?pd_rd_w=2n20W&content-id=amzn1.sym.dbbab27c-d7c0-450f-88f0-d00f5ea48cad&pf_rd_p=dbbab27c-d7c0-450f-88f0-d00f5ea48cad&pf_rd_r=CX0MA6WJVTFJ9XRCW750&pd_rd_wg=pH5dH&pd_rd_r=a9e20d0f-52d8-4927-90e4-a98a811ddbe9&pd_rd_i=B074CRFKRS&psc=1&ref_=pd_bap_m_grid_dv_rp_hxwhrp_sspa_mw_bia_0_3_i

I hope that helps, it's all very confusing!

I had keratin for first time three months ago, was recommended Pureology Hydrate shampoo (purple bottle). It seems to be doing the job.

Girlintheframe · 21/11/2025 07:15

I have regular keratin treatments. To begin with I was using the Kerasilk shampoo and conditioner. Now I use shampoo and conditioner from Mood. My hair dresser said the shampoo doesn’t matter so much (as long as it a good quality brand) but to ensure the conditioner has keratin in it.

It’s definitely semi permanent. I was getting it done every 6 months but am now doing every 9. My niece has had it done twice and never needed it again (been 3 year) so must depend greatly on your hair type.
Tbh although it’s really expensive it saved me a fortune in trying different products to tame my frizz and the amount of time it’s saved me is huge!

One thing to bear in mind is that it does lighten your hair. I always have the treatment first then my colour.

Julia90 · 21/11/2025 07:22

Hey, I've used Tresemme keratin shampoo and it really helped you should try that

HouseWithASeaView · 21/11/2025 07:44

The products you use really do make a difference. I’d been having mine done for a year or so and we went away for a couple of nights and I used the hotel shampoo & conditioner. Mistake! It could tell the difference within a couple of days.
For me, swimming a lot (particularly in the sea) seems to affect it and so does skiing with a helmet on (I think perhaps it’s the sweat & warmth within the helmet for several hours at a time over consecutive days). This are both first world issues and could be avoided! It does mean that I am
in a pattern of having mine done in January, in about April when we’re back from skiing and then at the end of the school summer holidays. Last time, I went for 6 months between treatments and, whilst it hadn’t reverted all the way back to my original type, it was definitely bushier and responded more to drizzly days.

brightnails · 21/11/2025 08:40

just use the products they advise. then there’s no guesswork. why risk it? my salon either provides the products or gives you a discount if you’ve got enough at home
