Earrings that you can’t get in your ear

Is anyone else finding more earrings on the market that won’t actually go in your ear? I’ve bought earrings from next, M&S and Olivia burton that I literally can’t get in my ears in the last year or two. Plus a couple of primark pairs but I almost expect that. It’s like they’re being made more cheaply and perhaps cut bluntly at the end of the metal bit? I wear earrings most days and have plenty that go in no problem, so I don’t think it’s my ears. Obviously as earrings are non returnable I’m so frustrated at potentially wasting money every time I buy a pair! Tell me I’m not alone

Do you mean that the posts are too thick? I have nine piercings and I haven't noticed this I'm sorry.

I bought some chunky hoops recently from Oliver Bonas and found exactly the same thing!! Which is a shame because I love them but I can’t get them in and of course can’t get a refund

Yes I have found quite a few where the angle of the post is off and very hard to get in. Not ideal.

Could you try an insertion tool?
I use one for my labrets as they go in from the back

I bought some from Oliver Bonas about 2 months ago and the posts are too thick. As PP can’t take them back either

Nearlyadoctor · 18/11/2025 21:58

@MabelMoo23 - mine were a small hoop style as well

Yes, I’ve had this a few times too. Most recently an Accessorize pair I purchased from Next.

I emailed them explaining they were faulty as I couldn’t wear them due to being unable to insert them into my ears. They refunded my account and told me to dispose of them or donate them.

I’d complain to the shop you bought them from. If you can’t wear them then they’re not fit for purpose.

I was given some lovely Ralph Lauren earrings last Christmas, wore them for the first time last month and it took an absolute age to get them in, the angle of the curved piece that forms the point that goes through the hole made it almost impossible to aim it in the right direction to get it in.

If the ends are rough or blunt or at a bad angle you can sand them smooth or use a cup burr tool. Use very fine sandpaper and a light touch.

Not a problem I've had since I had my ears repierced with a needle, but this has unlocked a memory of being a teen and putting an earring in backwards so I could put the post of the one I actually wanted to wear against the end of it and then use it to guide the new earring in through the hole in its wake. It was a bit fiddly but it worked!

Yes! Got some beautiful Monica Vinader hoops for my birthday recently. The posts are so thick, they are so uncomfortable to wear and very painful to put in. Obviously I can't return them as I had to actually attempt this in order to realise it, so I'm now stuck with earrings that were not cheap but leave my ears sore and red, if I even manage to get them in.

It’s so annoying isn’t it! My theory is that it’s cheap manufacturing. I am going to attempt to return a pair to M&S that are blunt and wide at the end- although sanding is a fair shout that I hadn’t thought of to be fair.
