I think it’s absolutely fine. If you dress it up with the right accessories, it’ll fit right in. Left on its own then yes, it’s fairly plain. But sparkly heels, a dressy bag and jewellery will make it look totally different.

Why are people still promoting this business?

Debenhams or Jolie moi? If the latter I've never bought anything from them, what's the issue? I thought they were just a budget friendly clothing brand

TheApocalypticiansApprentice · 18/11/2025 08:34

The former.

It is not a real shop (even online), just a conglomeration of greed and rubbish - with absolutely no customer service, as countless MN posters have related.

mamagogo1 · 18/11/2025 08:39

@TheApocalypticiansApprentice they aren’t promoting it, they simply found a dress on the site. I’ve ordered from them recently without issue but I only ordered one thing and it fitted.

Grammarnut · 18/11/2025 09:12

Looks very nice. With a nice bag, sparkly heels and some jewellery it will be fine. You will look good.

I used to go to a lot of black tie events but now only one annual one. In the last few years I've noticed quite a few women wearing outfits that I really wouldn't have classed as black tie dresses, so I expect the dress code is evolving to encompass a wider scope.

I don't think anyone would bat an eyelid at that dress but I wouldn't have chosen it for a black tie do, it just seems very everyday rather than a bit glitzy. I wouldn't feel dressed up in it and that would make me uncomfortable, with my DH wearing dress shirt and DJ etc. I'd feel he had put in more effort than I had! (So annoying that men get away with the same outfit every time...) Even with a sparkly bag and lovely shoes, this dress is a bit going-to-the-library rather than black tie, which is supposed to be a big occasion. To me, it is very basic and plain, sorry

DO NOT ORDER FROM DEBENHAMS....

See my previous thread on my latest problems with the brand

DeepfriedPizza · 18/11/2025 10:00

I thought black tie had to be floor length?

VenusClapTrap · 18/11/2025 10:40

Interesting comments about Debenhams. I didn’t know this. I ordered something a couple of months ago and it was very poor quality.i shan’t again.

mydamnfootstuckinthedoor · 18/11/2025 11:08

I think it's lovely, and easy to dress up or down. HOWEVER ... I would warn you against buying anything from Debenhams online. If you look for other posts on the subject, you'll see that lots of people have been ripped off by this site, which is an umbrella site benefiting from the Debenhams name.

notacooldad · 18/11/2025 11:14

Not any more (unless it's something uber posh, like a royal function)
I havent worn anything floor length ever and ive been going to DHs black tie events for 30 years and have never been out of place.

Op I like the dress and something similar would be suitable.

Pearlyb · 18/11/2025 21:05

Thanks for comments,very helpful!

It's a bit more basic but I think it will be OK then if I dress it up a bit with a sparkly heels and clutch, and some jewellery. Not too much jewellery though I suppose, I guess black tie is meant to be a bit more toned down (?)

I already have the dress and didn't want to order anything new. Debenhams can indeed be a bit of a hit and miss - it's more of a storefront and various businesses sell stuff through it. I had no issues with the Jolie moi dress though, I ordered two sizes and returned the other one, and everything went well.

I thought black tie was either, and floor length definitely for white tie?

I always did as well and used to get myself in a right tizz with what to wear. In the early days of going to DH’s events were the invitation stated black tie dress code I felt really over dressed.
My best advice would be know exactly what the event is before deciding what to wear.

I think maybe, like a lot of things, people have relaxed the rules to suit themselves.

personally I’d rather keep the rule then I know what I’m dealing with!
