Good quality wool coat that will not bobble - where?

I will start by saying that I don’t have a MaxMara etc budget.

I really would like a good quality wool coat. I bought one in 2023 from Whistles that is pure wool and it is quite warm BUT I already looks quite bobbled, even though I have looked after it and not worn it all the time, as I have other coats. I think it’s the type of fabric. Their current coats are made from the same type of wool.

This year on impulse I bought a Sezane coat (was in Paris and really wanted to buy something!). I have only worn it a couple of times so not sure how the fabric will last, but I can already tell it’s not very warm.

Any suggestions???

I always find Hobbs coats good quality. Perhaps not the most fashion-forward, but generally nicely cut and well made.

MidnightPatrol · 16/11/2025 19:25

Agree Hobbs, LK Bennett v good.

The latter occasionally has very large discounts on coats so worth keeping an eye out for.

Buy a de-fuzzer. They cost about £15 and give your clothes and soft furnishings an extended life like you could never imagine.

Newmeagain · 16/11/2025 19:31

Thanks - I will take a look at Hobbs and LK Bennett.

@silkyfilament I do have a de-bobbler so will try that on my Whistles coat but I really want something good quality that will not suffer that fate. I had coats in the past that looked great for years.

I would look at Massimo Dutti for high wool content at a reasonable price point. I also have a Mango coat with 70 % wool content that looks as good as new after 3 years. I live in Spain though, so not really sure how well they stand up to the cold.

PenelopesProteinPackedParty · 16/11/2025 19:32

I agree with Hobbs.

Ah, I see. I have a beautiful cashmere black coat from Joseph that takes everything thrown at it. It never bobbles or looks tired. I rate their coats, if that helps.

Was coming on to say Hobbs, I see I'm not the only one!

I've just bought a purple wool coat from them last month. My previous Hobbs coat lasted me 4-5 years.

rereturner · 16/11/2025 19:51

I had a fairly expensive (for me) wool item that bobbled and did a bit of research. Apparently even top quality wool clothes can bobble, but it should be a finite amount of loose fibres. So if you can get a de-fuzzer the bobbling should settle down and not be an issue once it’s all gone.

Jigsaw and Jaeger

GreyCloudsLooming · 16/11/2025 19:59

I would look second hand. Eg, I have a pristine, beautiful wool coat from Calvin Klein that cost less than £50.

HollywentLightly · 16/11/2025 20:13

I've got fantastic Laura Ashley and Jaeger wool coats on ebay/vinted a few years ago each and they look great. I think older (even 4/5 years) is better quality and will serve you better. That said, I need synthetic to be properly warm, and have a puffy mountain warehouse coat for sidelines and school runs.

Jaeger have some really lovely 100% wool coats that are reduced currently on the M&S website. There's a beautiful long camel coat with Maxmara vibes that's also available in a Warm brown.
I've recently bought a couple of Nicole Farhi coats in Tk Maxx at 80% & 90% wool cashmere mix, otherwise I would be buying the Jaeger.
Emma Hill on YouTube has a video out this weekend on 10 wool coats for under £300 featuring the Jaeger camel which might be useful depending on your budget.

Yes, Jaeger is a good suggestion but unfortunately their coats are much too big and long for me (I am on the shorter side and very slim).

some good suggestions - thanks all.

Edited

Both Mango and Zara have good quality wool coats at a reasonable price. Look for the ones made with Manteco fabric, it is an italian fabric manufacturer that supplies Max Mara and other luxury brands.

I imagine that quality of the fabric is not the same in Mango than in Max Mara, but I have one from Mango and it looks like it costs three times more than it does. And is quite warm (I run quite chilly).

MidnightPatrol · 17/11/2025 19:20

LK Bennett have 30% off now FYI

madaboutpurple · 17/11/2025 21:39

I always go to charity shops as often people get fed up of coats. People often ask me about my coats and of course the usual ebay and vinted websites.

Howmanyroses · 17/11/2025 22:19

Look at Cos boiled wool coats and jackets, Arket and MHL Margaret Howell on Vinted. Really nice quality, never bobble

Howmanyroses · 17/11/2025 22:20

Second Jaeger, especially from A few years ago, also Jigsaw

Justputsomeyoghurtonit · 18/11/2025 09:07

Hi OP. I have a massimo wool/cashmere cape coat that I bought when pregnant with dd17yrs ago. It hasn't developed a single bobble ever.

Also jaeger is great, though there has been a tiny bit of bobbling, it's a well worn pea coat and 13yrs old.

But my best coat is maxmara, bought in 2004, adjusted by a tailor to modernise it and looks brand new. But I got it in an outlet mall in the US when the exchange rate was amazing! And even then it cost £400!
