DD17 and cystic acne

Until a year or so ago DD had lovely clear skin but over the last few months she keeps getting lots of spots and cystic acne especially around her mouth and chin. It's really getting her down.

She keeps her skincare routine fairly basic. She has tried most of the cheaper off the shelf products with little success. I'm wondering if anyone can recommend anything which may help her?

Is there anything anyone can recommend? She eats too many crisps and snacks foods and absolutely does need to clean up her diet but is really fussy so that is going to be a bit of a challenge.

Has she gone to a doctor? If it’s acne then over the counter stuff probably won’t help much.

What helped me clear sudden acne many years ago was a not touching skin, b.complete switch to elemis products.c.perfectil skin-hair-nails vitamins. I still swear by perfectil all these years later.

My DD developed similar in her late 20s. She saw a pharmacist who supplied very strong cream of some sort. Not a great look while using it but it did the trick. Try the pharmacist!

Mine cleared up very quickly after trying Skin + Me, my formula included antibiotic. I'd suggest GP for a teen though.

Seconding Skin+Me, I had this 18 months ago. My diet was very poor at the time so I cleaned that up and tried a few other things, made no difference. A few weeks of Skin+Me and they went and have never come back. I think it costs £24.99 per month but I need nothing else except a basic SPF moisturiser and face wash.

ETA - I’d consult a GP before getting for a teen though as it’s strong stuff.

Spots on your chin are usually related to a hormone issue of some sort. I’d speak to a GP.

47 skin is absolutely amazing! Expensive but so worth it x

My dd has the same and got some cream from the Drs which has helped a lot.

My daughter suffers with terrible cystic acne. Our GP has prescribed her with 3 months of antibiotics and it seems to be helping

FancyNewt · 16/11/2025 22:34

Antibiotics from the GP

The chemist can prescribe an appropriate cream. I developed cystic acne after my HRT was changed - at the ripe old age of 65. The chemist sorted me out.

GP.

YesItsMe44 · 16/11/2025 23:30

I have struggled with it for years. I found a good skincare routine I use a glycolic face wash), topical ointments/creams (glycolic/benzoyl peroxide), the pimple patches do wonders to draw out the bacteria, etc., and diet does affect mine. I don't eat junk on a regular basis, but found when I eat crap breakouts are noticeabletopi within days. If using benzoyl peroxide wash hands thoroughly as it can stain clothing (neckline from pulling off tops) and towels.

Duac cream was a saviour for me, it's really strong though. The GP can prescribe it x

I agree!

Sounds hormonal. She could try accumax and have a look at her diet.

PlatinumEdition · 17/11/2025 11:08

Thank you everyone. I think we will start with the GP and also try some of the topical suggestions.

I've been taking antibiotics for a year- Lymecycline. I also take a plethora of supplements; omega 3, biotin, collagen, retinal (vitamin a) etc to treat from inside out, seems to work!
