Does anyone use the ‘colour’ shampoos that are available rather than box dyes?

I’ve always used box dyes but it’s just so messy and I have to do them every couple of weeks. I can’t afford Salon colouring and I don’t want to start. Just browsing and I see JustForMen do a shampoo that tints greys, there’s also plantur39 brown and others- so I just wondered if anyone had any luck with these? I have a fair amount of grey. Now my hair is getting thinner, I am finding it impossible to get the edges of my hairline without colouring my face/scalp and it looking really harsh. I have dark brown hair. If I dye my hair I end up with it everywhere- my neck, my ears, my arms, my face. I’m so over it but I’m not ready to go grey or to go short. From what I’ve read these shampoos don’t require gloves or any kind of covering, just shampoo and they tint the greys gradually?

I used it and it makes no difference. This is not what you asked for but have you tried the root sprays? I have now let my gray come through with some grey blending at the hairdressers. The root spray was handy to extend the time in between colouring, as I had to do it every three weeks so feel your pain

@saywhatdidhesay yes I do use the spray if I have noticeable roots if I’m going somewhere, it doesn’t solve my issue with the very edge of my hairline though as the hairs are too fine to do them with the spray.

You can also get the dab on powders which are good. Some more expensive than others

I use this. It is a dye, though you only use what you need so there isn’t the faffing around you get with box dyes. I just run it through my roots every 3 weeks or so and then rinse it out 20 minutes later. I’ve had the same bottle for 6 months and it will probably last another three.

Not what you asked for OP, but my hairdresser gave me this Indola brand -coloured light styling mousse, I was surprised by how a tiny amount has given great coverage of my greys.
Obviously it washes out, but for anyone not needing to wash hair every day…
Impressed, will be buying again.

Also thanks for the Schwartzkopf recommendation upthread, I will try also.

Ok, tried the Schwarzkopf gloss conditioner last night. Didn't time it but left it on while I washed the rest of me. Found it really hard to rinse out and didn't like the way my hair felt after. Head was itchy and ended up going back to wash it again using normal stuff. No difference to grey's.

I use the coloured dry shampoo spray and find it great for in between hairdresser appointments. My hairdresser uses Demi colour, it's really improved hair condition and growth. She orders the dye at her reduced price and lets me buy it at the same price so I can colour in between visits to reduce costs.

As this popped up in my active threads again I thought I’d update. I have been using the plantur brown shampoo and conditioner, it gives me an extra week or so but does give my hair a gingery tint rather than dark brown. It does also stain my nails. I still think the root spray is the most effective for a single use cover up but unfortunately you can’t replace actual dye. Shame 😢

I was a natural brunette, and got fed up with dying my hair just before lockdown in autumn 2019. But I also wasn’t quite ready to embrace the grey. My hairdresser recommends a colour depositing shampoo, and I actually use a crazy coloured one, but they do have natural colours too. Pricey, but you may be able to get a tester. I wear gloves when applying mine, otherwise it does dye my hands. I do a shampoo once a week ish, and it fades over the week. So I use the shampoo, leave it in my hair while soaping, then rinse and condition as normal.

It leaves my hair in beautiful condition as well.

Do you live near a further education college? If they teach hairdressing their salons are very cheap around £20 for balayage colour and cut

Has anyone tried the polar range?

Ebok1990 · 14/01/2026 00:11

Put a drop of Shrine drop it in your normal shampoo and/or conditioner.

CoastalCalm · 14/01/2026 00:30

I used Plantur brown and it made my greys look orangey - kept it up for a while then donated to my mum who had much better results with it

Yes I’ve tried it. See my previous post above

YarraValley · 15/01/2026 17:13

I’ve started using ‘pure henna’ now. It’s really great as it’s apparently not damaging at all and because it sort of fades you just do the whole of your head every time instead of just the roots. Which is much easier.

I find my clients that have used these, give a very soft coverage. They work nicely, but not if you have stubborn white hair regrowth or wish to achieve a dense, rich colour.
