Outfit Needed for Graduation

Hello all

I am a bit stumped about what to wear for my graduation, it is in December (in about a month's time). It would be good if it is something I can wear again.

I am a deep winter so mostly wear blacks and greys and a hint of jewel colours.

I'm in my 50s, size 10, height 5'3.

Thank you.

I go to two graduations a year as an academic and the range of outfits worn by graduands is huge. The best outfits are the ones that look comfortable, aren’t too low cut (looks awkward with the gown and hood if boobs are on show) and shoes you can walk comfortably in. What would you normally wear to a smart occasion and do you know what colour your hood will be?

Oh - I was your twin a few years ago.

Why are you stumped? There’s no shortage of nice black or grey dresses around at the moment. (Does your institution have a specific dress code?)

If it helps I wore a high necked white broderie anglaise blouse from MSGM, a black and white tweed A line midi skirt from Maison Margiela, and YSL black suede court shoes with a low block heel. Also a black and white houndstooth coat by Rochas that I swapped for a gown for the actual ceremony. My outfit was very ad hoc - only the blouse was new, (bought at the end of the summer sales with a view to graduation) the rest was things already in my wardrobe that somehow made an outfit. (I did borrow some lovely earrings from my mother, too.)

Do you have anything in your wardrobe you’d like to wear? If not, where do you usually shop - and what’s your budget?

Would you wear something above the knee? This could be lovely:

Cos mini dress

If I were doing it again I’d be looking very hard at this skirt (which would easily be incorporated into my winter wardrobe) and maybe adding a black cashmere top and my best jewels:

Margaret Howell knitted skirt.

I was given the honour of carrying the mace in a very formal graduation ceremony. It meant I had to sit on the platform for the entire procedure. I wore a black skirt with a long line top in the same colour. The top has a round neck and long sleeves. My hood was gold colour so it showed up well. I also wore black pumps with a small heel ( I am 5 ft 8 ins)

I wore a similar outfit for my doctoral graduation - the outfit is red and gold. I think its best to stick with plain solid colours.

Not sure if this is your cup of tea, but definitely something you could wear again for many types of occasions?

put graduation in the search bar on ASOS

I know. I have attended many too but normally don't care what I wear. This time I figured I would make an effort. The range is huge isn't it?

When I graduated in 1986, it was a strict dress code - black skirt and white shirt.

By this standard, you would be able to wear it again, and it needn't be expensive.

A tip is that any top has a button to anchor your hood without rising everything up.

Yes this is lovely. I’m very happy to wear above the knee. Thank you.

Edited

I think I’m looking for something more funky, as opposed to elegant.

I didn’t think of ASOS, thanks for the suggestion.

Some hoods don’t have loops anymore. It’s a gamble.

This sounds great.

I have lots of things I can wear, I think I want something that's on trend.

I am in London next week and have a bit of time. Was thinking of popping into &Other Stories.
