Hair knackered….I need to completely change what I do and I need help!

My hair is fine and I have a lot of it, but it’s suddenly frizzy and broken. I wash it daily and condition and then dry on a cool setting just using my fingers to style it.
It is coloured every 6 weeks but hairdresser only does the roots.
My hairdresser has recommended I embrace the wave, she will stop using bleach at all and just tint my grey roots.
She said to stop washing it every day and don’t use the hairdryer. She has also recommended a curl cream and a serum.
It isn’t going to work washing my hair in the morning during the winter and going out with soaking hair so I need to change to an evening wash and let it dry naturally. But not daily.
I just don’t know how to style it in the morning when I’ve slept on it!
Am attaching a picture from recently.
Can anyone help?!!! I feel rubbish!

Thank you to everyone for the advice. I have washed every other day and left to dry naturally. I don’t like curl cream I realise or the crunchy feeling.
I’m not sold on the wavy look yet, think I need to experiment with some different products/ways of managing it.
Am very tempted by the Dyson airstrait!
And have ordered some of the colour wow mist spray….roll on better hair days

So I couldn’t resist buying an Dyson airstrait! I left my hair to dry naturally for a week and a half and it looked a frizzy mess and I felt crap the whole time.
I hate curl cream stuff, it makes my hair feel crispy.
I have cut down washing it from every day to once every 2 or 3 days and I’m only going to use the airstrait on wet hair on the lowest setting.
Can anyone recommend a brilliant spray protector. I have got one but I want a really foolproof one.
thanks

I have started sleeping in a silk bonnet (100% silk not satin) and it has made a world of difference to my dry, frizzy hair. I don’t even need to brush it anymore. It has been the biggest game changer to my hair out of all the potions etc I have tried.

My hair naturally dark brown but lightened to copper and slightly wavy.

The air is very dry with all the central heating too. I would leave a conditioner on your hair and wrap in a towel at night and wash off in the morning - slather it on. Alternatively, do the same but wrap cling film around and leave for a couple of hours. Aussie 3 Min miracle is good for this.
could you try a high lift tint instead of bleach?

sciaticafanatica · 26/11/2025 06:53

Silk pillow case and aveda Botanical leave in treatment

landlordhell · 26/11/2025 06:56

I’m 54 and have lots of fine hair. I only wash twice a week. Hairdresser uses a high lift tint on my foils every 8 weeks and I have some low lights on there too. I’ve started using more expensive shampoo- K18 detox makes a real difference but is pricey. I only need a tiny bit though so it lasts. I use a serum after using cloud 9s to wave.

Let us know. I’m looking g at the Babyliss air brush care. Much cheaper than Dyson but for my needs it seems a better fit

@CoralPombear am mid 50’s, on hrt but not sure if still peri or through menopause yet. Yep, the blonde has to go now. Weird how it’s suddenly gone so bad!
I’ve been washing daily since my teens, time to change unless I want to look like a haystack!

I have fine hair too and I found that once I changed to washing my hair every second day the condition of my hair started to improve. (I’d already stopped colouring it.) It took a little while for my hair to adjust to washing every 2 days, but now it no longer gets oily after a day.

Also, I use old cotton tshirts to dry it. I just squeeze out the water over and over again with the tshirt, rather than rub at it with a towel. I do it while watching tv. Using the finer cotton is supposed to be less damaging than a towel and I think it is.

You tube is good for videos on how to put your hair up in a bun simply.

My hair is different to yours, thick, 2a/b course and dark but I have changed the texture from unruly to smooth and swishy. I get my roots done at the hairdressers every 3 weeks without fail but no longer use bleach.

Through trial and error, I now do as little messing with my hair shaft as possible and look after the cuticle. My washing routine is done in the evening when I have time to do it properly.
I wash my hair every 2/3 days, use pantene to coat the hair shaft in silicones which my hair needs.
Wash only the roots, in small straightish movements to not mess or knot hair. After rinsing, generous condition mid to ends, gently slide it down the hair, use a tangle brush to coat the conditioner through, gently brush whilst rinsing under cool water. Gently squeeze the water out. Never rub a towel through, I put the wet hair up in a microfibre hair towel whilst I get dressed. Blast with an angled hair dryer from roots down the hair to get the worst of the water out (mine will take up to 4hrs to dry naturally). Then leave to dry. When almost dry, I use a hot air brush to section, smooth and finish off the hair in a bouncy blow dry. The only other thing I recommend is a 100% mulberry silk pillowcase. As my hair is quite thick, it usually looks better after sleeping on it.

Good luck OP.

I have the Revlon one step, it's brilliant. Prefer it to the Babyliss Big Hair.

chunkyBoo · 26/11/2025 07:45

My hair went from straight as a kid/adult, to curly and frizzy after kids and worse frizz in peri. I have started having keratin treatment at my hairdresser and will continue/ it’s brilliant!

Iloveleaveinconditioner · 26/11/2025 08:28

Coconut oil OP. The Organix one in the small bottle that you can get in boots etc. Slather it on, leave it in for a few hours, wash it out. Your hair will be so much softer and less frizzy!

Im hoping to get a Dyson Airstrait for Christmas, really hoping it’ll help the health of my hair long term too!

Sadteacher · 31/01/2026 16:34

@Lucie11 just wondering how you are getting on? My hair and age are similar to yours. I’m considering stopping the bleach highlights which make the grey roots less obvious due to straw texture!

Lucie11 · 01/02/2026 09:53

Hi @Sadteacher. Thanks for checking in. I bought a Dyson air strait and stopped washing my hair every day. I now wash it every 3 days and dry it straight using the air-strait.
Have also stopped having blonde highlights and my hairdresser uses a brown tint on the roots. There is still a lot of blonde, but the downside is the greys show earlier!
It feels and looks better but I have made peace with the fact that I have fragile, fine hair and it is always going to have a tendency to frizz up!

Have added a photo of how it looks using the Dyson to dry it.

My hair just couldn’t take the constant lightening!

Oh wow, that's transformed! It looks amazing!

Be careful with leave in conditioner. I have very fine hair (but lots of it) and putting too much product in can actually be counterintuitive - it weighs the hair down and makes it feel dry and sticky. I would recommend cutting off the damage as much as possible, washing every 3 days rather than every day to allow your hair to breathe, and using small amounts of gentle products like living proof and morrocan oil.
