Keratin smoothing treatment

I'm planning to have a keratin smoothing treatment, so not a straightening one but just want to get rid of the frizz

Hairdresser has said that I can't wash my hair for at least two days afterwards, ideally three, and said it might look greasy immediately after being done. Thinking about it that means it will look awful till it's washed?

Is this correct? There's a very limited number of days I could plan for that and I really don't want to walk around looking like I've got mega greasy hair! I might need to leave it till after Christmas.

Thanks.

I've had these treatments for a couple of years and never had greasy looking hair.

Huckleberries · 13/11/2025 17:31

@TheWiseAmethyst thank you

So what does it look like immediately you leave the salon? It's going to look as it does when you leave the salon, isn't it, for a couple of days?

In many ways she seems to really know what she's talking about, which is an improvement on the first one I went to to make enquiries (I think there might actually be a money launderer rather than a hairdresser). The third one I spoke to could not have been less interested in explaining anything, just wanted to take the deposit and get the appointment.

She did say she was describing a worst case scenario so I thought I'd ask on here as you ladies seem very knowledgeable!

I would've made the appointment, but I wanted to look over my diary to see where I can get two days that I don't have to go out anywhere, but that turned out to be harder than I thought it would be!

also wondering if the smell is gonna drive me mad for a few days.

I've had lots of these treatments and I've found my hair looks a bit greasy on day 2 and 3 but not too bad. My hairdresser said it's OK to use dry shampoo once if I'm desperate. I have and it looks OK and didn't spoil the keratin. The worse thing is not being able to pin or tie it back, especially in summer.
It's worth persevering though because the end effect is really good. The first time you wash and dry it, it's lovely to have smooth, silky locks.

Huckleberries · 13/11/2025 17:33

@Fionasapples "My hairdresser said it's OK to use dry shampoo once if I'm desperate"

yes, that's what this lady said. Agree about not tying it back. I always have it tied back at home to keep it out of the way.

i'm excited for nice hair so I would be really pleased to do it before Christmas! I could probably find somewhere else but this lady was recommended by my sister - she does her highlights and they look really good.

Can this be done on frizzy, perimenopausal, coloured hair?

Didntask · 13/11/2025 17:37

Honestly, a couple of days of having greasy hair you cant tie back is worth the following months of frizz free, low maintenance hair. Plan some time where you're home for a weekend (ie get your hair done on the Friday, stay home that weekend) and enjoy!

Apparently, yes. She looked through my hair and she said it doesn't look bad actually but I'm just tired of the drying and styling - half of that is managing frizz and it goes wrong when it's raining or windy or whatever.

I don't use a lot of colour though, just doing a root touch up now and again.

Yeah, I suddenly have a load of stuff to do with some Christmas things starting next weekend, although that makes sense. Neighbour put some decorations outside today!

@Huckleberries Hi. My hairdresser comes to my home. When it's first done it feels so light and airy and all the new grown hairs stand up like electric. Next day it is smoothing down and looking more sleek. The smell hits me now and again, maybe a hay smell? Hard to describe? I have dry hair and I wash mine as little as possible. It will get greasy looking by maybe day 8 or so. Honestly the treatment has been so beneficial for both me & my hair. It lasts around 4 months and with using straighteners I could stretch it to 5. I had mine done last Friday, the smell is gone and it's looking good. I don't need to do a thing to it.

ibuprofenhead · 13/11/2025 21:13

Mine goes very flat and smooth until I wash it. By day three mine is greasy but I have greasy hair anyway.

Huckleberries · 13/11/2025 21:46

Oh no, is my hair going to smell like hay for a week?

I've got a real thing about greasy hair, I wash mine every day but that's partly because gym. Which I won't be doing after the treatment as I can't wash my hair, i'll be missing two of my favourite classes at the weekend if I do it on a Friday.

I don't have dry hair, she said herself that it was in good condition. So I suspect it will get oily or greasy or whatever at the roots quite quickly.

Maybe it'll be fine, and it will just be a case of using dry shampoo

I think, if they can't fit me in next week, it really might have to wait till after Christmas which is a shame because all I want for Christmas is nice swooshy hair!

I would say it’s more limp rather than greasy, but it’s worth it!

TheWiseAmethyst · 13/11/2025 22:21

@Huckleberries No it's just an occasional waft. Nobody has ever mentioned it to me. Like the pp said it's so worth it to have manageable hair.

SquirrelosaurusSoShiny · 13/11/2025 17:35

Yes, definitely. It's a treatment and the keratin coats the hair and protects it. It's not like the old Brazilian blowdry straightening treatment that damages hair.

Yes don't do anything that makes your head sweat, you shouldn't let your hair get wet.
You can smell it faintly but it's not horrible and it's just a faint whiff now and again. When I leave the salon my hair looks great for the rest of the day. About halfway through day 2 it might look a bit limp and slightly greasy but nothing that would stop me going out.
The 3 days is so worth it for 3 months of soft, smooth hair.

NeverOneBiscuit · 13/11/2025 23:37

It’s well worth it. My hairdresser has always said don’t wash it until day 4, and till that time no tying it back or tucking it behind your ears. This really helps the straightening effect.

I’ve always found my hair looks sleek and shiny until day 4, not greasy. It’s a great treatment.

Bluemin · 13/11/2025 23:43

Don't want to be a party pooper but do research the link between keratin treatments and increased risk of uterine cancer so you know the facts before you decide to do it or not.

Huckleberries · 14/11/2025 00:32

@NeverOneBiscuit i'm not going for straightening though just for removing the frizz

So does that mean I don't have to worry too much about the tying it back? I mean I'm going to sleep on it so 🤷🏻‍♀️

In terms of limp versus greasy, if you had to go out with it looking like that, would it look dire?

I would definitely find out which product the salon is using and look up the ingredients. I think it's the ones that contain formaldehyde that have health concerns.

I've had a couple of treatments and never noticed it look particularly greasy but would say it goes a bit limp. I was advised to use shampoo and conditioner that doesn't contain parabens or sulphates (SLS). I usually use Maria Nilla. There is definitely a whiff to the hair but I would describe more as a mild landfill/trash smell. Not trying to put you off, if I sniff my hair I don't smell it but then every now and then ill get a whiff so it's not a constant smell.

Huckleberries · 18/11/2025 23:13

Thanks for all the advice
Booked in for Friday

What's the best shampoo to get for after? They said any SLS free so shall I just go to Superdrug? I can only go after the treatment and now I'm worried about looking terrible 😂

I can order something from Amazon. Does it have to be an expensive one? And what do you guys use?

I really hope this turns out well!

My hair always looks good on the day it’s done, it’s fine the following day, looks a bit limp and greasy the day after and greasy thereafter. However, once it can be washed I just comb it, leave it to dry naturally and it looks as if I’ve had a blow dry. It lasts for ages and looks great.

HouseWithASeaView · 18/11/2025 23:45

There are different types of treatment. The one I have done now, it can be washed after a couple of hours but I left it overnight. With the type I had for the 3 or 4 years before that, you couldn’t get it wet (whether shower, sweat or rain) for 72 hours. That included steam too so no hot baths. The day I had it done I have perfect straightened hair. The next day, it would always look a bit odd. Not greasy as such as it is in a coating but lank and just very unlike me with my normal exploding hair. Day 3 was more of the same. As I said, though, I’ e been having it done for almost 4 years and it is about the most life changing beauty thing I have even done

StElwicksNeighbourhoodAssociation · 19/11/2025 01:00

I'm really tempted to get this done. Can I ask how much it costs?
