Does your hair define/rule you ?

Mine does.. If it won't do what I want to to do (which lately is most days) I am in a foul mood all day and/or night (depending if I have done my hair for a day or night event).

I have just arrived at work and my hair looks terrible due to the damp weather I just want to go home and see no one now .. but I have a long day in the office.

Feeling miserable and fed up .. 8 hours till home time ...

I have a lot of it and it’s very curly. It rules me to an extent, as I have to plan my week around when it needs washing and drying, which takes ages, and I prefer not to waste it on a day when no one is really going to see it. If I’m going to that effort, I want it to be admired!

What treatment did you have ?

I had a nanoplasty treatment. I chose it over the keratin so I didn't have any of the 72 hour faff. This was my first treatment and and the result was quite straight, which doesn't always suit me depending on what I'm wearing. For my next treatment I'll talk to the stylist about leaving in a bit of wave. The condition and texture of my hair since has been fabulous - soft, silky, shiny, and I only wash every five or six days. It's a bit pricey but included in the price is shampoo, conditioner, and a leave in, and I've not spent anything else on my hair since, whereas normally I'd be buying this, that and the other just in case they work.

No, after years fighting the waves I eventually realised that the less I did to it the better the results. I get a good cut (spend quite a lot on this) and then just wash, bit of gel air dry and let it do it’s own thing. Run my fingers through it to detangle it, maybe pat down the top with wet hands and a bit of hairspray if there’s a bit of frizz. Haven’t touched my straighteners for many years and only use the hairdryer (with diffuser) very occasionally.

Yes,yes as it's ok on day 1,my hair is fine with a lot of it,but day 2 flat and horrible so wear a hat for 2 days, when I go out..I'm old,59🤣 but still have over my shoulders length ,natural colour now, auburn and grey. I would love to have a pixie cut too but coz it's fine I don't know if it would work

StanfreyPock · 16/11/2025 19:19

My hair was always pretty meh, shortish, fine with a slight wave, hellish in humidity. I wasn't even that bothered about losing it when I had chemo.

Then I went grey - proper platinum silver and I love it now! The silver hair has a bit more body and I grew it long during lockdown, can have it up or down, straight or waved, great fun, never been better 😋

It used to as it's naturally thick, frizzy mess but then I started getting Brazilian Blow Dries about 5 years ago and will never go back. I only have them every six months and can't say my hair is particularly exciting but it is at least smooth and sleek and I can just roughly blow dry it, brush it and be done with no additional styling.

You do have to be careful what other products you use. I don't dye my hair as otherwise it's too many chemicals and I have to use specific shampoo and conditioner but it's been game changing.

jammytoast2 · 16/11/2025 19:34

Yes! Genuinely I hate it. If I have a bad hair day (which I do most days) I will be pissed off about it all day. I wash and style it everyday and still it won’t do what I want. It’s fine and flyaway. The slightest bit of damp makes it go greasy looking and frizzy at the same time - how is that possible! I often think how much more time I would have in my life if I just had long, thick hair that looked amazing with just a brush ran through it.

Must admit as I’ve gotten older I’ve stopped caring so much. I still wash it daily because I don’t like the feeling of it being greasy and itchy but I will just wash it and put it straight up in a messy bun or pony tail now rather than spend ages battling with it just for it to look shit anyway. Honestly if I had the money / a magic lamp the first thing I’d change about myself would be my hair.

This is a revelation. I honestly didn’t realise that I’m not the only person whose happiness is ruled by my hair! I went to Thailand for a month recently and felt like shit because I had post partum hair regrowth sticking up all over the shop. I just looked insane.

if my hair looks good then so do I. It’s very baby fine but there’s a lot of it. It is prone to drying out, so I use a lot of hair oil, and use heat as infrequently as possible.

The best things I did for my hair was argan oil and lots of it. Less heat (heatless curls for the win), Biotin and Hair & Me minoxidil meds.

AlPaccacino · 16/11/2025 19:38

I used to have gorgeous sit on hair and really thought it defined me, along with my cleavage. Then hubris struck: breast cancer! Now I don’t actually care. I shave it all off and wear a lot of vests.
Hair has grown back but not as lush and lots of white streaks. I just diffuser and stick on a hair band.

BlackberryAppleCrumble · 16/11/2025 19:38

No, and I don’t really notice other people’s hair, either. I’ve had people tell me they’re having a bad hair day, and honestly not been able to tell what they meant.

I have my hair short, in a cut which means I can wash (shampoo, maybe conditioner), brush and air dry. I haven’t ever used straighteners or products, and my hairdryer has dust on it.

I sometimes wonder if people think I’m having a permanent bad hair day, but then I decide I’m happy in my little low maintenance world and I’m not scaring small children, so I carry on as I am.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 16/11/2025 20:04

My hair prefers to defy me, so I'm probably in the 'rules me' camp. Quite frankly, I can do whatever I like with it, and in five minutes, it will run amok and be back to its usual wild self, screaming that it can't be tamed. Post-washing, it is in amusing corkscrew curls that don't hold their shape if exposed to The Great Outdoors. If it sees wind, rain, sweat, humidity, static, etc. it tends to go, "Ta-da! Look! I look like a 1980's newsreader/a windswept Shetland pony/Cousin It/a combination of Brian May and Hagrid!"

Its natural state, and lack of finesse, tends to alarm hairdressers. My favourite one declared, "It's very fine, but there is a LOT of it, and all this blow-drying is really hurting my arms!" 😁

Needless to say, I'm glad that I work in an industry where it doesn't matter what my hair looks like... and even more so, that I can keep it hidden under a hat for the next few months!

EnchantingDecorating · 16/11/2025 22:53

Having said mine doesn’t rule me, about 15 years ago I got alopecia and lost about a third of it and I was devastated and realised how much I took it for granted. It came back after 18 months or so. Perhaps that is part of why I am so much more chilled about it now although I didn’t think of that when i posted earlier. I don’t think about the alopecia often at all now, but for a very long time I was paranoid every time I found some loose hairs or felt a tingle on my scalp.

Legthing · 16/11/2025 23:02

My hair looks okay as long as I wash it every couple of days. It doesn't look that bad if I forget to brush it.

I definitely am not defined by it, except in that I look a bit ordinary.

Same! No way would I waste a good hair day on just me and the mirror 😁Before I had my nano treatment, I'd have to bundle my hair up under a cap if I had to leave the house on a bad hair day.
