How do you put together your wardrobe?

I am quite frumpy really. I am 52 and overweight and have always committed the cardinal sartorial sin of thinking I will dress better when I lose weight.

But now I am really keen to actually pay attention to what I wear.

I follow on youtube Jennifer L Scott who has a vlog called The Daily Connoisseur. She has what she calls a 'ten Item wardrobe' (although it is a bit more flexible than that) and every season she reviews what she has and plans to take into the next season and then she buys whatever she thinks she might need. TBH I am not going to buy myself 40 new outfits a year. But I am curious if other people have a plan, or if they wing it and buy things they like when they see it, or (like me) they occasionally have a buying spree and impersonate a racoon on crystal meth and spend stupid amounts on clothes that are unsuitable.

Would love to hear your stories / ideas/ suggestions!

No, not me. I have skimmed it, but I think I am asking a slightly different question.

I used to buy things when I saw them with no plan. It didn't work that well, I had some nice items but no real outfits. Now I use Instagram and Pinterest and just generally my memory, and have a list of items that I'd like to buy in advance. I then keep an eye out for the perfect item. So for example I wanted a pair of knee high black leather boots, but they had to be flat, pointed/almond toe, and the right height up my leg to look modern. I didn't just buy a pair of knee high boots, I identified the things I liked about the boots I saw people wear, and then found a pair that met the criteria. I also wear them with mini skirts and not skinny jeans to look more current. I've learned that there are little elements in items and outfits that make them look current versus dated. To the untrained eye it isn't obvious, and I'm not effortlessly stylish so it does take some work for me to avoid buying things that are just slightly wrong. I find it easier to stick to neutral colours too.

It's helpful to decide on most flattering colours, styles and budget before going shopping. It is really too easy to impulse buy stuff you can't resist, only to find if doesn't "go" with anything else you own.

Not, this post was mine and I don’t consider myself frumpy or overweight. I dress ok but not marvellous

I'm reading your thread more properly now @Moneyplantss . Interesting replies! Looking at the Mint Velvet website someone recommended too.

One job I am going to do today is to get out everything I know does not suit me or that makes me feel uncomfortable and I am going to wash and dry them then donate them. Just get rid of it.

Then I will see what is left. And start making a list. I am also going to hang my necklaces on the hanger with the shirts or tops they go with. I've always been quite good with colours and jewellery.
