Shampoo for oily hair

Terrytheweasel · 11/11/2025 11:46

I have greasy hair and wash it daily but everything I use seems to leave a sheen/film on my hair.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a oily hair shampoo. Extra points for a natural one - I’ve been using faith by nature recently but it’s not working.

I had a cheap Aldi one which was great but it was discontinued.

Depending if you work at home or need to go in somewhere... If you can go a week or even upto 9 days of not washing it (yes it will drive you crazy) / wearing hats outside / hair styles of it up and out the way... use a hair perfume or normal if you think it smells. This is how you reset your hair... this is how I reset mines years ago. Now it barely gets grease at all... I wash my hair 3 times a month. Might sound bad to you but my hair dresser said I have one of the healthiest hairs she sees.

Edited

Thank you for your comment - hairdressers have told me not to wash it daily too but the skin on my face is oily - it’s just how I am.
My hair is fine so it’s no bother washing it in the shower daily and if makes me feel fresh - I just want a shampoo that leaves it bouncy and not weighted down with product.

I get greasy hair after a day as well and the best results I have had were from Color Wow shampoo and conditioner. I have tried loads as I have a sensitive scalp. I don’t mind washing it everyday but is is quite thin so I am trying to do it every other day. Although color wow is expensive, it has had the best results to wash it less often and also makes it soft and shiny.

The Aveeno ones are the best natural
ones I’ve found for greasy hair.

Sorry to state the obvious but make sure you are really getting the shampoo into your scalp, not just on your hair, it makes a huge difference. On days my hair is really greasy/claggy I shampoo twice, there’s no harm in it. Also try not to get oils/conditioner on your scalp as they’ll not help the greasiness.

I think the resetting thing is a myth. I have greasy hair that needs washed everyday but when we were in lockdowns I tried to reset it by not washing for 3/4 days at a time, then every other day but the greasiness never got better and my scalp suffered too. So I’ve gone back to washing everyday unless I’m being really lazy!

Totally get it. In the name of cleanliness! I'd also love a deep cleaning shampoo!

My hair is thick so it's a pain to wash anyway and used to have to wash all the time... I wash it more with work etc obviously but ideally I can get away with it not being washed as it's not greasy now.

Also for your skin issue... diet possibly? I noticed when I cut out sugar it really helps... but being a sugar addict, it's not easy!

Mine was absolutely fine until I hit peri and started taking HRT. My skin and scalp are much oilier now. I think it's the Testosterone. I've even got spots now and always had food skin. My hair is now greasy at the roots and dry at the ends and it driving me mad. I work out every day and I'm a real sweater so need to wash my hair at least every other day and chuck tons of conditioner on the ends.

I always wash my hair twice and shampoo it like they do at the hairdressers - it definitely helps. Agree regarding the hair reset too, there’s not scientific evidence so I’m not convinced - despite being told by various hairdressers over the years
I agree with another poster about diet and hormones. Your diet affects your hormones so that would make more sense to me.

I find if it gives you an extra day it washes out colour is so annoying

Same for volumising shampoo so I end up washing it every day very active in my job so I have to really, but it would be nice to have a break

Terrytheweasel · 11/11/2025 17:42

I’ll just add that I don’t mind my oily skin and hair but I just find that most shampoos leave it not feeling properly clean. I think a lot of them having chemicals and added oils.

Will definitely try Aveeno - thank you!

Do you use conditioner?

i found that reverse shampooing helps. Ie condition first and then shampoo

Also always double shampoo

And no conditioner near the roots.

Using a hair straightener makes my hair flat and greasy. I use a cheapy revlon one step brush dryer and it gives it volume.

also depending on your colour I find highlights make my hair less greasy

and definitely stick to products made for oily fine hair

Plump82 · 11/11/2025 17:58

Try shampoos that are clear not creamy ones. I can't ever use creamy shampoo. I have greasy/oily roots and dry ends and honestly the only shampoo I use that doesn't leave my hair like an oil slick by the end of the day is cheapy alberto balsam! I give my scalp a good clean with it and then use something much more nourishing on my ends. I tried Aveeno Apple Cider clarifying shampoo the other week and it was awful. Greasy and also broke my out along my hair line.

CraftyNavySeal · 11/11/2025 18:04

If you have oily hair you need one with all the sulphates in, most “natural” ones are just rubbish.

The Elvive oily hair ones are good, I quite like Aussie Mega as well.

Hullabalooza · 11/11/2025 19:14

The herbal essences white tea and mint (I think, clear and white with green lid accents) are really effective clarifying shampoos in my opinion, reasonably priced too.

DiscoBeat · 11/11/2025 19:19

My son used to have slightly oily hair when it was very long and I bought him the Faith in Nature dragon fruit one which was a success.

AppleCherryTree · 11/11/2025 19:20

Revolution Haircare Salicylic Shampoo really helped my DD.

MIAMNER · 11/11/2025 19:29

Vichy Dercos Anti-Dandruff and Anti-Itch Dermatological Shampoo for Dry Hair with Salicylic Acid - recommended to DD by GP. It’s expensive and she says it smells of egg but it definitely helps.

What temperature water are you using to wash your hair? If it's too hot it will make your hair greasy too. I prefer to wash my hair separate to my body and keep the water as cool as possible, it really helps.

Silverblue1985 · 12/11/2025 19:08

I’ve got massively greasy hair and am now using Simple Kind to Hair Gentle Cleansing Shampoo.

On the hair reset, I washed it much less often during Covid to try and it did nothing. Hairdressers always said this will stop when I’m done with puberty- that didn’t work so my hopes are on the menopause now 😂

Dita73 · 13/11/2025 22:54

I have shockingly oily hair (thanks PCOS!). I use this and it’s brilliant
