Gym trainers

I need advice on trainers! I've decided to join a gym after many years and do an intense body blast camp for 6 weeks! So now I'm stuck I dunno what sort of trainers to buy? Do I need special ones that cover all exercises & weights or will any old Nike Gym type ones do, obviously not the fashion ones. I don't want to pay 100s so a budget friendly option would be great, just in case I die 😂

I always wear barefoot style trainers in the gym. I'm wearing Merrell at the moment. They will provide you with better stability and contact with the ground and allow your toes to spread properly. It's a lot safer especially when you potentially have a heavy weight on your back ie when squatting.
Edited to add: if you can't find any you like or within price range then go for a shoe with as little cushioning and as wide a toe box as you can find.

I would say go what’s most comfortable and in your budget. A good all rounder is fine to start out with. If you keep it up over time you might find you prefer something a little less cushioned (so a more barefoot type shoe) for stability in certain exercises (squats, deadlifts etc), but that’s not an immediate requirement and very much down to personal preference.

If you are going to be doing a mix of weights and cardio, Nike metcons are a good starting point. They are stable enough for lifting in but you wouldn’t be able to run far in them as they aren’t very cushioned. You don’t want to be lifting weights in the fluffy hoka style trainers, it’s like lifting standing on a marshmallow.

what does the intense body blast camp mean? As pp also said, ideal shoes for running or high impact jumps are different than ideal ones for heavy weights, where you want stability.

RavenQueen · 09/11/2025 16:31

@KatharinaRosalie it's a mixture of pretty much everything. I'll be going to the gym 3 times a week for 6 weeks working on all different things. Cardio, weights etc. They're small classes of about people 8 or less and there will be one or 2 trainers/coaches there

I’ve got some fairly basic asics for that type of exercise, something like this

Here

I do alot of various classes and noone has any real fancy/pricey trainers.

Lots in my gym like OCs.
I tend to use my retired running trainers, so currently mizuno.

One of my classes likes to do to jumping, but then I do a weight class after, somy running ones with less bounce seem to work.

I used to go in whatever gym trainers were in my budget though. Then when they retire, they become gardening or painting trainers.

I think you’re fine with fairly standard trainers for that op. Something with a bit of cushioning for higher impact stuff. If you really want more
stabilith for whatever reason, you can take your shoes off. I often see people deadlifting and squatting at my gym in their socks (they don’t allow bare feet). Be careful the surface isn’t slippery in just socks though.
