Sisley and Chantecaille

I saw mention of these two brands on another thread but didn't want to hijack it

I'm in the Middle East and I always stock up on skincare/beauty products when I go home

I'll be travelling to the UK in a couple of weeks and would appreciate your thoughts on whether these brands are worth the money and if there are any particular products you recommend in each one?

I'm 29, normal skin but as 30 looms it makes me think that it's time to get serious...

I was always afraid of wasting a big load of money if they turned out to be nothing special

I haven't tried that much of each, but of what I have tried (mostly cadged samples) I think I'd plump for Sisley without hesitation. I really rate the Hydrating Mask in blue tube (keep it in the fridge).

Mavornia · 07/06/2008 21:21

Thanks 2loudboys - it's on my list!

if you are in the middle east, why on earth are you coming to the uk to stock up?
surely it should be the other way around?

Mavornia · 07/06/2008 21:47

I'm not going to the UK to stock up on make-up (it would be nice to be that extravagant...) I'm going to visit family and I'll use the opportunity to bring some things back

I doubt that you've ever tried to buy make-up/skincare in Egypt, stich - it's either non-existent or grossly overpriced.

so no, I don't see your point

ah, but that's the awful lure of it, icod

I have an unjustified but sneaking suspicion that it must be marvellous if it's that expensive

dh will be pleased as I endeavour to find out

yeah, i wonder how many folks actually buy their stuff. i mean, even their eyeshadows are astronomically expensive.

JemimaBear · 07/06/2008 22:06

Yes but lovely lovely lovely stuff. E.g. the Sisley fake tan is like nothing else, leaves St Tro and all others in the shade, but is sooo expensive. I can't justify it as you go through at least a tube a week as the tubes are very small. I use the Cucumber day cream tho and is lovely. And my Mum loves the Sisleya stuff. I think Sisley lives up to all the hype, you just have to suck up the price - or decide that you can't or won't.

On Chantecaille - I love their powder and Real Skin foundation and have heard really really good things about the Future Skin foundation. Again, expensive but worth it, imo.

JemimaBear · 07/06/2008 22:27

Is like anything else, imo - you get what you pay for. And you get an amazing amazing self tan with Sisley, for example, but at £60 a tube (at least 4 years ago and at an airport, so cheaper than in store - so i don't know what it costs now) that lasts two, maybe three applications, I can't afford it, and if I had that money would have it done professionally. I guess it comes down to what you think worth paying for (if expense is even an issue to you). I wouldn't pay for an expensive shampoo, but I would a conditioner. I wouldn't necessarily be that concerned about cleanser, but I would a moisturiser. Or a serum, or mask, or so on.

expatinscotland · 07/06/2008 22:28

£60 a tube!

For real?!

What is in it, I wonder?

Mavornia · 07/06/2008 22:29

No huge issues but I'm Irish and my skin is very pale and quite delicate, I turn lobster red in the sun, I have a bit of an oily t-zone (though I'm sweating like a pig at the moment, all hot and bothered all day because of the heat here)

i can look a bit sickly without a good dollop of fake tan (also have diabetes which I think makes me a bit pale)

i guess i would like to look less tired around the eyes - 14 month old son still waks up 2 or 3 times a night for a drink, to have his back patted or a cuddle, frig bless him and we're still carrying him to put him to sleep and he's about 14 kg - though I guess this is for another thread

I just bought some chantecaille blusher in a tube. It is a cream and water based, so feels very cool when you put it on and blends easily. You can also use it on lips. Quite nice, and it does look v. natural, which is what I was after, but don't know how much better it is in comparison with other blushers. I like it, but suspect that it is expensive for what it is, if you see what I mean.

Mavornia · 07/06/2008 22:33

I'm practically frothing at the mouth with lust, JemimaBear - I don't know why I started this thread - soooo expensive but but maybe a combined birthday/xmas present from a few family members, would love to try a mask and the fake tan

JemimaBear · 07/06/2008 22:48

Oh get the No. 1 on the self-tan then which is for pale skins (am Scottish, so blue naturally). It makes you look just super healthy, not at all orange or fake-tanned. People at work on the Monday after I first did it asked me what I had been doing over the weekend, as I looked so well. Lots of them. And older men too, who wouldn't usually comment if I had come in with one leg missing!

And then there is an oily skin mask which is also gentle which my sisters have raved and raved to me about.

Definitely don't be tempted by the combination eye and lip creme which I don't trust. Why would something for your lips be something for around your eyes too? I am suspicious too that they hand out masses of samples of it, all the time, in every store.

And go for the Chantecaille Future Skin too - is supposed to be aaaaamazing. If you are looking for a foundation. Their Real Skin was brilliant for oily skin, just like your own skin but better, and I loved it. But Future Skin is supposed to be better still!

Good luck and have fun choosing!!

JemimaBear · 07/06/2008 23:05

I am instructed to tell you by my little sister who is a make-up artist (and therefore font of all wisdom) that the Sisley cleansers and toners are also fantastic. Contrary to my own belief, skincare doesn't start with moisturiser. So there you go. I am happy with a cheapo cleanse as long as it gets the job done, but apparently that is NOT the way. You are, apparently, setting in motion with cleansing a series of events which ends with the moisturiser. So if you start it off wrong, you end up asking too much of your moisturiser. I am not sure how a person could end up asking too much of their moisturiser, but honest to god, it is how these make-up artist people speak (and i love you little sis, dearly)

Mavornia · 07/06/2008 23:16

well JemimaBear, it would be rude of me not to give the old Sisley products a go after all your time and effort!

I'm currently using Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish (when I can be bothered to unearth a muslin cloth from the laundry mountain...) but you may have enticed me over to the dark side of overpriced but delightful skincare

OP posts:

well, no not in egypt. but i have in dubai, saudi arabia, and abudhabi. and its much much better than in the uk.

Mavornia · 08/06/2008 10:42

Ah, the Emirates are something else entirely

you probably find more things in cairo but I'm in alexandria. there are a few shops which stock imported brands but you can never be sure that they haven't been tampered with (eg, half the contents taken out and replaced with goodness knows what) or they could b out of date. all overpriced anyway

so it makes more sense for me to buy from the UK

no fake tan here anyway which is one of my fav products, shelves are full of skin bleaches and whiteners

OP posts:
JemimaBear · 10/06/2008 00:02

Oh I was wrong (or if I am being Hillary Clinton, I misspoke). The thing that was £60 was the anti-cellulite stuff (which is aMMMAZING). The fake tan may be more around the £40 mark. So, yay, we are saving money already what with my rubbish info!!

Ecmo · 10/06/2008 00:04

I thought this was going to be a thread about baby names!
I was thinking they were very unusual

AitchTwoCiao · 10/06/2008 00:09

if you have a bit of grease on your skin you MUST investigate the sisley tropical resins range. unbelievably good for shine, but unlike other products they're not about blotting.

expatinscotland · 10/06/2008 00:16

PMSL, Ecmo.
