Multi pocket travel gilet for flight

WhisperingAngelisnotbad · 08/11/2025 03:19

Hi I am looking for a gilet that I can take on board a flight to help reduce baggage allowance. Has anyone tried this with the ScotteVest or similar? https://www.scottevest.com/collections/mens?srsltid=AfmBOoqJZobu2gBv9sSiIcfejLTDQOa-T3siagOxIPPXysFNcLP1Ngfu

They are quite expensive and need to be imported from the US, so I would like some advice before actually buying one!

You see, I don't think trying to navigate Ryanair's bag charges is tight. I think it is expedient. I think the airline is trying to milk customers for extra charges and I am trying to find a convenient way to fit around that. While still travelling pretty light.

We bought carry on luggage and underseat duffle bags to fit the dimensions they decided upon previously, and the rules for these have now changed. I would much rather have my regular handbag with me than the small duffle bag.

I paid for a 10kg suitcase last month, but I am thinking I can do without it., especially as it doubled my fare. But I need just a small amount of greater capacity than my handbag holds.

I guess I could buy a new dimensions backpack and pack a different small handbag, that I already have, inside it, but I am still interested in a gilet. I wouldn't pack valuables into a backpack, I would much rather have my valuables on the front of my body. Or in a secure pocket on a jacket or gilet.

Maybe I could download books onto the ipad we have just acquired, I hadn't thought of that.

Fuck me, just take a bag you lunatic. Or better still fly with a proper airline.

"Fuck me, just take a bag you lunatic".

Really.

While I can see the gilet may seem like a good idea from experience I think it will be more hassle than it is worth. My DH has flown a couple of times with cargo type trousers with extra pockets. Both times he has been made to empty all his pockets. It wasn’t even the case of him trying to take extra items in them, but they contained things like a pack of tissues, mints, paperwork etc.

If you have a gilet or jacket with things in the pockets, you take off the jacket and put it in the plastic container to be scanned/ inspected, it goes through and then you slip it on again.

You can't do that with trousers, so you would have to fiddle around emptying pockets.

I bought a rucksack from decathlon that is underseat sized. It has loads of pockets for electrical gadgets and space for a change of clothes. The gilet seems a bit daft, just wear layers. A jumper round your waist/neck too.

Ginmonkeyagain · 08/11/2025 11:28

Or you could under pack your duffle bag and squish it up? My duffle bag (a Kipling with multiple internal pockets) can do anything from 2 days to 8 days depending how I pack it, fully packed for 8 days it will not go under a seat, lightly packed for a weekend it easily fits. That is the beauty of soft bags rather than hard shell cases

WhisperingAngelisnotbad · 08/11/2025 11:32

I probably wouldn't need a jumper for the destination, though. A light gilet with pockets would be more useful.

I was really hoping for advice or recommendations from people who have had experience using similar items, rather than people who haven't.

Why do you need advice? Are you looking for someone to tell you which order to put things in the pockets? I don’t really understand what you are asking, since you seem to already have worked it out.

Ginmonkeyagain · 08/11/2025 11:42

I wouod like to see the look on the face of the person in the seat next to you as you arrive on the plane looking like someone prepared for a full day of fly fishing. 🤣

WhisperingAngelisnotbad · 08/11/2025 11:44

I would rather like one of these gilets or jackets with lots of pockets. I was hoping that someone who had already bought one of a particular make would read the thread and say "Oh, Manufacturer X makes one of these, but size up as they come up small" or "I bought one from Manufacturer Y but I wouldn't recommend it because it fell apart after a month". Or "Look, this one here is on a Black Friday offer and I love it, it somehow manages to have pockets but be quite flattering!."

That sort of thing. I fantasise.

After years of googling or asking mumsnet about unconventional solutions to everything, I've come to the conclusion that if the product doesn't exist or you don't get adverts on Google, it's not a gap in the market it's a bad idea.

Your gilet is going to be annoying at your destination, annoyng on the plane, and only contribute minimally to your baggage allowance. If you want pockets, take a Barbour jacket enormous pockets and put a tiny reusable shopping bag in.

One of my last MN questions was why don't people knit washable nappies, which turned out to be with very good reason, so no judgement!

WhisperingAngelisnotbad · 08/11/2025 13:22

They do exist. There is the SCOTTeVEST I linked to, which is American and quite expensive, I was really hoping someone might have experience of using it to share with me.

There are less expensive ones on eBay, again I wondered if anyone had tried any of these. These might not be such good quality, so feedback would be interesting.

There is another brand for which ads are coming up, but looking at the Trustpilot reviews it seems that the company got taken over and quality and service suffered.

And there is the Stuffa, which I think would be overly warm, though maybe an interesting idea.

We do have countrywear shops where I live; I have just been looking at Barbours, but they didn’t seem to have large internal pockets, which I would like.

It would be great if someone could post who actually knows about and has used any of these.

I don’t think what you’re looking for comes in flattering variations. It’s Detectorists chic.

waitam · 08/11/2025 17:38

I'm being nice here but I don't know anything about the multi pocket gilets! However there are backpacks with a zipped compartment at the back which means your valuables are resting against your back and not easily pinchable . That's one of your concerns sorted.

A small flat soft leather passport holder with a cross body strap is perfect for cards, phone etc. I've used one many times under my jumper or coat in addition to just the underseat backpack, no issue whatsoever. Another security concern addressed.

So can you now see why people are directing you away from a bulky (with multi pockets full to the rafters) gilets like a fisherman to a simple underseat backpack with a compartment at the back, and a little crossbody passport holder.

I think you're overthinking things a bit TBH and making an easily solved issue into a major one.

I would like to to fly out on Ryanair for a day or 2, probably multiple times. With a smallish handbag that will fit their measurements. I would like to take an ipad, phone, charger etc and enough clothes for a couple of days. They charge for a cabin bag, I am thinking that with a gilet with pockets (and maybe cargo trousers) I can manage without a cabin bag.

You can wear outer clothes on board, so coats, jackets whatever, that are not included in baggage allowance. If you want to travel light with just cabin luggage, take a small bag for phone, ipad, money etc while on the flight. Put it inside your cabin bag for boarding. Imo these gilets might not earn their keep in a hand-luggage only scenario as they wouldn't get enough wear in your destination, depending on where you are going. Looks wise with a gilet - you could probably do better from any UK outdoor or high street retailer. Rohan, Mountain Warehouse, Blacks etc. or even Next, M&S etc.

Some on amazon

https://amzn.eu/d/i4WprCg

If I wore that, I'd be asked to move aside for a full body search. I can hear the snap of the rubber gloves right now and the "bend over" order.

roses2 · 08/11/2025 17:47

I bought a Scottevest - worth every penny! So many pockets and a massive back pocket for a tablet + book + water bottle. Wear it every time I travel and never ever been stopped or questioned including with EasyJet, Wizz and Ryanair.

Definitely size up 1-2 sizes as once stuffed it can be a bit tight. The quality of the seams etc is far superior to the cheaper ones.

Over multiple journeys at £60-70 a go, it would be more expensive to take a cabin bag.

I don't need many clothes for 1 or 2 days, 1 or 2 tops and pants. I am thinking also, a fold up backpack or bag that I can put in a pocket. And probably a kindle.

I am looking to see if anyone has experience of travelling very light, maybe you haven't then?

Hi, not read al the ideas others have suggested, but I’ve seen a zippered empty neck support.
you can fit loads in the compartment, and it’s reported to be comfortable to use as a neck support.
People have said that it saves on(chargeable) luggage.
i know mumsnetters hate TEMU, but they sell them for a reasonable cost

I bought a Ryanair sized bag from Amazon, which just fitted enough clothes for three days. I always travel in cargos for my passport / phone / cash etc and pack a lightweight handbag to use when I get there. I don’t think you need specialist gear for a weekend break.
