I need to up my non existent skin care routine. My skin is really dry and blotchy making me look tired and old. I find skin care baffling! Where do I start? Help!!!

Maybe start simple, I love the Welida range of moisturiser. They're in green packaging and you can buy them from Holland and Barrett or boots, they're sold everywhere. Until a year ago I used nothing but soap on my skin but the improvement is astonishing since I've been moisturising. I've tried a few brands and that's my favourite so far.

HouseFullOfChaos · 06/11/2025 21:36

After I wrote the above I realised that you may be looking for advice from people who know loads about this subject Blush That person is definitely not me. I will say it's trial and error though, I tried one moisturiser which felt great going on but clogged so many pores I had awful spots for weeks after using it for only a few days.

shuffleofftobuffalo · 06/11/2025 21:44

do you use anything already? I’m 46, my skin is dry and sensitive. I go for non scented very moisturising products, my skin can’t cope with all the fancy retinols and the like. So I use:

cleanser morning and night - Clinique take the day off cleansing balm
toner twice a day - Clinique clarifying lotion 1 for dry skin
morning - two layers of skincare - first is the ordinary caffeine and Clinique moisture surge, second is Clinique moisture surge eye and khiels ultra facial cream.
evening: caffeine, Clinique moisture surge intense, the ordinary rose hip oil.
twice a week - Clinique facial scrub

my skin is very happy with this routine, noticeably duller if I miss things for a few days.

it is a very expensive skincare regime tho! I have tried all sorts but decided to just keep buying what works for me. unfortunately for me all the “what works” products are expensive 😬

Try Cera Ve moisturiser day cream and night cream for moisture.
Apply a serum before moisturiser.

you can buy it in Boots or Sainsbury’s (and other places!)
its fab. Easy to use, pretty cheap and gets good results.

I’m 53 and I was given this cream as a gift. It’s one of the best, most softening, hydrating, enriching creams I’ve ever used. It’s absolutely healed my dry skin and given it more bounce. It’s for face and body but I mostly use it on my face.

Depending on how dry your skin is Diprobase is really good and hydrates your skin. You can buy it from pharmacists in big pump bottles, it lasts ages and is cheap.

Aside from that, my routine includes hylauronic acid serum which is plumping and moisturising. I spray my face with tap water, put the ordinary - hylauronic acid serum on top of my damp face and neck, then moisturise on top of that with something with an SPF included of at least 30.

My skin can get pretty dry left to its own devices and this works to keep it all under control.

theDudesmummy · 06/11/2025 23:24

Doublebase gel, it's really good and also cheap.

Having used Elemis for many years, I never thought I’d be an Aldi girl, but my favourite combo at the moment is the Aldi exfoliating face wash, and the Aldi Lacura Caviar face cream. I forgot my face cream bag on a weekend away earlier in the year and picked them up in an Aldi and I’m a total convert. My skin can become soooo dry and this works perfectly.

I just used the face wash every second day (I use a gentler wash on the other days, I don’t want too much exfoliation), use a toner (I’m on an Elemis one at the moment but any works fine), then the face cream.

If you want to start easily and cheaply use classic Nivea in the old fashioned navy blue pots. Can't beat it and it's sold everywhere

Myoldbones · 06/11/2025 23:56

Korean is great. Illyoon moisturiser is fantastic for dry skin. You can get it on Amazon or Yes Style.

Knittedanimal · 06/11/2025 23:59

Try Tropic Elixr and the skin dream cream. Lovely moisturising but not greasy, and last for ages.

UmberMoose · 07/11/2025 11:39

I have been using the La roche posay moisturiser and its good for dry skin. Here goes my routine if you would be interested:
Morning:
Using water to wash your face,
Sebamed clear face gel,
Garnier spf
Cicaplast
Evening:
LRP moisturizer,
Tretinoin (0.1) from skinorac
Sebamed clear facial gel

KiwiFall · 07/11/2025 11:59

I use a mixture of Tropic with Weleda night cream and Clarins double serum. My skin does get dry this time of year and I have to tell myself to drink extra water to compensate.

I have very dry, irritable skin, and the saviour I discovered 10 years ago is Steam Cream - Rose

It’s soft, gentle, with minimum weird ingredients. As soon as the nights draw in, I switch to this and it keeps my skin comfortable, settled and clear. I can’t recommend it highly enough!

STEAMCREAM | Rose Absolute Steamcream

With our Original Steamcream at its core and blended with deeply nourishing Shea Butter and skin-conditioning Damask Rose, this rich, sumptuous cream soothes and strengthens skin, forming a veil-like barrier to nourish and prevent moisture loss. Suitab...

Get a serum and moisturiser.

I use on wet/damp skin Glow Hub Hydration Hero Hyaluronic Acid Face Serum | For Dry Skin – Glow Hub Beauty followed by Facial Serums | Anti-Aging & Hydrating Serums | CeraVe UK serum cream one pump Retinol and one pump Hyaluronic Acid and the moisture rich cream from the same brand.

I am mid 40s and fine lines are being kept at bay as well as fine lines around my eyes have gone away compared to 10 years ago.

This combination of products is working for me and I have sensitive, combination skin.

The Hydration Hero Serum

A Hyaluronic Acid Facial Serum. Looking for some mega moisturising goodness? Plump, brighten & instantly replenish dehydrated skin with this Hyaluronic Acid + Polyglutamic Acid Face Serum.

What do you use currently?

You need to work out if your skin is dry (lacking oil) or dehydrated (lacking moisture), or indeed both. A few of the suggestions above are excellent for hydration but won't do anything for dryness.

I'm 40, always suffered from dry skin/ blotches even after using a lot of high end stuff, I've found liz earle is THE BEST! I use the hot cloth cleanse and polish
Instant boost skin tonic then superskin nourishing night cream has worked wonders for me...until I put foundation on so I'm currently make up free until I find one that suits but everything I've tried makes me flare

Byoma is absolutely great and not too expensive.

yes, the moisturiser for dry skin.

dudsville · 08/11/2025 08:52

With regards to brands, you'll need to try things out for what works best for you. This is what helped my skin: Balm cleanser, glycolic acid, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, a rich moisturiser and then a balm moisturiser on top. I do this twice a day.

Bringemout · 08/11/2025 08:57

I’ve recently bought roundlab nourishing soybean cream. It’s brilliant, favourite cream so far (definitely not for anyone who get spots though). I think it would be best with a hydrating toner underneath it. I mainly use ti at night because it’s so rich. Be careful with hylauronic acid though, apply on damp skin, if the weather is quite dry it can dry you out further. I had to stop using it completely.

If you're on a budget, Nivea Q10 for dry skin. I use the nighttime one during the day. If it doesn't suit you're not wasting a lot of money.

Nivea is quite economical and decent
