I want Vicky McClure's hair - but will people think it's a midlife crisis?

Basically this. I'm late 40s with thickish straight brown hair which has almost always been a bit longer than shoulder length. I had it shorter twice in my life - once in my teens when I was growing out a perm and had a short bob, and once in my 20s when I had a posh spice bob.

I just love Vicky McClure's short hair (currently watching Trigger Point series 3), and have always loved Emma Willis' style too. I want to make the jump but worried it will make me look too jowly and middle aged (which I know I am, but still....). Also, will it take ages to style in the morning? I like the option of tying hair back on lazy days.

Anyone made the leap and have any advice?

Go for it. I got mine chopped off this year and I love it. If anyone doesn’t like my jowly, middle aged face that’s their problem. I was tying it back so much I thought it might as well be short.

I am 58 with a number 4 on the back and a number 7 on the top.

Thanks both. I'm really tempted to just go for it. Is it easy to style short hair, and would I need to get it cut more regularly, or can it be quite forgiving?

Mine is curly so I have to style it more to get it to lie flat but if yours is straight it should be easy to manage. I have been getting it cut more than normal because when it was long I could just get a trim every now and then and let it do its curly thing in between.

I've grown mine again but when it was short I had to have it cut every 5 weeks or so vs 10 now. Also blowdry it every day but that was quick and easy. Washing it was faster, didn't need to leave conditioner on or spend ages rinsing it out. . None of it was particularly hard but it was tricky if I was staying somewhere without a hairdryer. Whereas I let it air dry now it's longer so that's easier

Thanks @JaneJeffer.

@EnchantingDecoration Did you grow it out because it was so much of a faff? I'm very much a 2 or 3 haircuts a year kind of person, so with the best will in the world I doubt I'll be doing monthly cuts.

i have thick hair (wavy and prone to frizz) and have had it short and long.

When it was properly short (not quite pixie, but close) it was incredibly easy to style, literally wash-and-go (just run a bit of styling g product through and done). It did need very regular cuts though.

Transitioning to a longer style was an absolute nightmare and daily styling was a necessity.

Once it was long enough to tie back it was easier however it takes a LOT of work to look polished.

Personally in terms of effort I was happy with the trade-off of regular cuts for easy maintenance but then it does need to be short enough to be easy to manage.

There’s a risk of going short-ish that you need both regular cuts AND daily styling which is the worst of both worlds.

No, I had a baby and didn't have time to keep getting it cut but then it got messy and in my eyes so I grew it long enough to tie back then found I liked it longer again. Then I developed patchy alopecia and it was a lot easier to hide with longer hair. It grew back after a year or so but fear of it happening again has held me back from having it short again, although I wouldn't say never. The other thing was I felt I needed to make more effort with my make-up with short hair and I am not great at that. I tend to have it shoulder length for a few years then go to mid back length for a few years and back again now.

Oh no, now I'm really getting cold feet. I guess it figures that I'll need to spruce my face up a bit more if my hair goes (I'm always worried I'll look like a boy), and the thought of growing it out is rubbish. Maybe I'll just keep the idea on the back burner until I really do have a midlife crisis!!

Go for it!
However, her hair is quite fine so talk to your hairdresser about how it will work with your thick hair.

Regarding styling... I've had long and short hair. I've currently got a long pixi and it is the easiest hairstyle I have ever had. Everyone warned me how difficult it would be and when Ive had very short hair before, it's been a nightmare but fir some reason my hair "likes" this style and as long as I put in a bit of styling cream when it's wet (even if I dont actually dry or style it), its all good. I was also told by lots of people ot wouldnt suit me but actually it does. Which is all great but I dont actually like having it this short! 🤣🤣🤣

If you do get it chopped, be prepared to feel bald and a bit exposed for a little while afterwards.

Following from above - Im a great believer in trying out different haircuts. It really is, only hair and the grow out can sometimes be painful but it does grow out.

EnchantingDecoration · 06/11/2025 15:33

I should add that I don't think a Vicky McClure haircut would need more make-up, it is not boyish and is quite striking. My friend has it and never wears any make-up except mascara, but she has got amazing bone structure. She does have to straighten the front every day.

I have not got amazing bone structure and my haircut was more of a pixie but could have looked boy-ish on a bad day, it can be a fine line.

Not gonna lie, I dont style anything. Or wear make up.

I’ve been eyeing up Vicky McLure and Emma Willis haircuts for years. I’m not brave but I think you should go for it. They’re not that short they would grow out quickly (you’d def need a trim every couple of months)

i don’t think they’re middle aged haircuts, I’d say they are perfect for the 35-40 category

SleepingisanArt · 06/11/2025 15:56

I have short hair (number 4 back and sides with short choppy top which is almost spikey naturally and definitely spikey if I use product!) I can leave it to dry naturally or I can blow it into a very tidy style. It has to be cut every 6 to 8 weeks. I'm almost 60 and have had short hair since I was a student in the late 80s.

JaninaDuszejko · 06/11/2025 15:56

I think long hair drags jowls down more than short hair does, I always feel lighter when I cut my hair short.

I currently have a pixie, I get it cut every 6 weeks. I don't style it and use no product on it. I don't wear makeup and have a hatred of dangly earrings with short hair. I don't dye it (mid 50s, only small amount of grey). Nobody has ever mistaken me for a boy, men my age mostly don't have hair, so I don't look masculine. Think that covers all the clichés.

I have a lot of fast growing slightly wavy hair. The strands are fine but there is a lot of it. Do you have a regular hairdresser you trust who knows your hair? That's the best way to get a good cut (very important for short hair.).
