Collagen supplements

Wasn’t sure if this should go in here or menopause?
I’m looking forward some recommendations for a collagen supplement.

My already fine hair is thinning. I’m mid 50’s and haven’t had a period since about March, so probably menopausal as opposed to peri.

Has anyone tried any collagen supplements and felt they were helpful?

I’ve looked at Nutrition Geeks and Elavate.
I’ve been taking Perfectil Max for a few months, but that doesn’t contain collagen.

Any recommendations?

They don't work.

There was a BBC Radio 4 programme on this a few months back with scientists talking. Your body can't make use of collagen you swallow.

Best thing is to get your iron levels tested for a start.

You are still in peri till next March!

Witchyandtwitchy · 06/11/2025 10:13

Oh really? Maybe I’m stuck with it then.
I eat a good diet, plenty of protein.

Don’t think GP will help re blood tests. They’ll just say it’s part of getting older!

May it is ☹️

You can get blood tests privately online. Google.
They send you a small test tube and a lancet.

Plantur shampoo is good for hair loss.

Thankyou for starting this thread, I have been looking into collagen just this morning! It’s extremely confusing with the different types and flavours and now the curve ball of ‘it doesn’t work if you swallow it’! How can it be absorbed then? I follow Dr Terri Wahls and she recommends the use of bone broth for collagen, admittedly for health rather than appearance, and that is swallowed and absorbed the same way surely? I will have to search and listen to the scientists program mentioned.

My hair is thick enough and my nails are fine but my body is increasingly wrinkly one year into menopause and after losing two stone over a year. My face has fallen too. I was hoping collagen might help.

TeenLifeMum · 06/11/2025 11:27

There’s lots of varying reports and essentially it has to be hydrogenised etc to be absorbed. So some work but there’s a lot of rubbish out there.

I use ancient and brave wild collagen (marine) then move to bovine and back to marine. Personal preference is marine. I was cynical but was considering Botox as my face/skin suddenly looked awful. A friend recommended it and I’ve had it in my coffee daily since august. I’ve genuinely noticed a significant difference. a friend uses nutrition geek and rates it too but I prefer the look of the A&B glass jar on the shelf to the nutrition geek packaging.

The point is that the digestive acids in your stomach mean that any collagen does not reach your skin or hair.

If you want to boil up chicken or meat bones and drink the stock, do that but there is not guarantee it makes hair grow.

It's pseudo science- just because hair and nails are built through collagen it doesn't mean drinking it makes a difference.

I wouldn’t say it’s just hair loss, although there is less of it, but my already fine hair is getting finer. My hairdresser said that as greys come through they differ in texture to the non greys. Mine tending to be finer and more fragile.
My nails were more brittle but the Perfectil seems to have started to improve them.

That's true.
HRT will help but you can't ask for it just for your hair! Depends if you have other troublesome symptoms.

Witchyandtwitchy · 06/11/2025 12:47

I was on HRT a few years ago due to sweating, but it didn’t seem to help and I started putting on weight.
I had to come off it before an operation and as it didn’t seem to make any difference, I came off it and lost the weight.
So probably wouldn’t go down that route again.

I’ve just listened to this podcast and while it doesn’t say that collagen can’t be absorbed through the gut, and there are some studies that show benefits, I didn’t hear enough proof from anyone to encourage me to start taking it. I’m going to concentrate on improving my diet instead.

The Food Chain - What does collagen do for you? - BBC Sounds

Cosmetic companies and A-listers recommend it, but how sure is the science?

AnchorWHAT · 06/11/2025 12:56

Well, i have been using absolute collagen for a couple of months and my hairdresser (who didn't know) said that my hair seems thicker and longer and i have had compliments on my skin which i do think looks tighter but maybe just my skin care anyway, I'm going to keep it going for now.
Theres a nice offer too if you subscribe they send a free gift which was a bag with samples of their skincare stuff, if you do try it go for the gel version that dissolves in water, the powder is ok in coffee adds a creaminess but i didnt like the smell as i opened the packet and it was foul just in water 😀

PennyPugwash · 06/11/2025 13:06

I’ve tried absolute collagen and loved the results but I literally couldn’t stomach it. It was absolutely vile.
I’ve moved to revive which tastes slightly better but I don’t feel it’s as good.
haven’t noticed any difference in my hair but my skin is glowing

Did you try the liquid version or the powder?
