Hair topper advice

I'm thinking about getting a hair topper. Hair thinning a bit and already have fine hair so can't really put it up anymore. Have been looking at hair toppers and just don't know where to start!

I've been looking at Karen Harkin and Lisa Harkin from Ireland. Also, if anyone knows them, are they related?? They do the hair enhancers which i believe is just another name for toppers. They look amazing and real but are pricey at £1k plus. I'm also bombarded now with ads for cheaper hair toppers with great reviews so just don't know if I need to spend all that money.

Any advice would be appreciated.

There is one in the northwest, that my mums friend used and it was very good, depends where you are located.
it’s an actual salon and she specialises in these.

I wear hair toppers. Mine are by perfect fringe, shes on insta. Her pieces are spenny but amazing. She works purely online, so not being able to try them on is a downside but as long as you don’t have any customisations you can return. It has taken me a while to know what I like, but I’m so glad I wear them now. I lost pretty much all my hair due to medication I’ve been on for a neurological condition and when it grew back I started on other immune suppressants which had made it thin and fluffy. I don’t recognise it as my hair anymore. I feel much more confident wearing a topper. I’ll post a pic…

Also just to add, my mum wears cheaper ones and they honestly do look nice but she has short hair and wears small hair pieces that mainly cover just the crown. The cheaper ones don’t last and the hair is much harder to work with in my experience. The one I’m wearing on that pic is 2 years old and still like brand new.

Thanks for this. Is there lady in Lancaster? I think I've seen her ads. I thought she mainly did wigs. Will check her out though.

Your hair is gorgeous, it looks so natural. Sorry to hear about your condition and hope you're doing well. I will have a look at her account. How much does she charge if you don't mind me asking?

@Ang69The ones I’ve bought are around the 1k mark. Sometimes less if you want a small cap that covers a small area. However if you wanted something long and thick then they can be £1.2k ish.
The one I’m wearing in the pic was £1099 I think and it’s 20 inches long and medium thickness. She does offer VAT relief for medical hair loss so that helps, I got 20ish% off. As I said it’s 2 years old so they do last. It curls and styles like a dream. I love the fact I can style it in front of me on a wig stand and then just plonk it on my head when I’m ready to wear it 😂

Thanks so much for the info. I don't mind spending if it's good value. I think if it looks so realistic and can last a while then it's worth it. Your colour is stunning! Do you ever worry it will come off or that people will know??

FatAmy123 · 02/11/2025 18:02

Thank you ☺️ I don’t worry it’ll come off because it’s attached with 6 clips. I could honestly head bang and it wouldn’t come off 😂
The only thing I worry about a bit is that my own hair is sometimes visible underneath. It’s shorter so I hope it just looks like a layer in the hair. I’m not that bothered about people knowing tbh, the people I’ve told are always really shocked and said they have no idea. I just kind of think of it as hair extensions, but from the crown. It’s so weird that people can be funny about wigs/toppers yet no one cares if people wear extensions!
I’ve had compliments on my hair and I’m always tempted to blurt out it isn’t real 😂
I have two shorter toppers as well so some people must guess when my hairs different lengths and colours. But I do always have a fringe and a dark root, so they always have a similar look. I think they look most realistic if you choose the same length as your own hair but I think half the fun of wearing hair pieces is that you can have looks that are hard to achieve with my own hair. I get so bored of styles and colours usually.

I'm looking at something for my mum who has no hair at the front anymore. She wouldn't spend that much though. How comfortable are they @FatAmy123? I know for sure if I lose my hair I'll buy a wig!

Ang69 · 02/11/2025 18:15

Thanks again Amy, it's helped a lot hearing from someone who wears one. I can imagine they get quite addictive!! No more bad hair days. That's good advice about hair length. I'm thinking of cutting my hair to just above my shoulders, it's currently a good few inches below.i prefer shorter hair but will be nice to mix it up. Thanks so much again ☺️

You’re very welcome ☺️ They’re SO addictive! I don’t like to think how much I’ve spent over the last 4 years 😬😬 but, they certainly turned hair loss around for me. I found it so difficult and they made me feel so much better. I’ve also tried full wigs too and as fabulous as they are, I felt quite restricted in them, like I was wearing a hat all the time and I’m too peri menopausal for that! Toppers at least let your head breathe a bit.

@Ang69i purchased a topper from lisa harkin in a pop up . I felt it was very rushed and not great lighting so when i impulsively said yes il take it as anything looked better than my own hair and i was desperate when i got home and looked at it in natural light i realised the colour was too dark and not like my own hair at all so i am paranoid wearing it now. I noticed also the ends are a bit dry and ratty. I wish i had have got lisa herself as she seems amazing and takes her time but unfortunately i got one of her employees and i felt they didnt really put much effort in.
I am now trying to source another one, have actually been looking at ali baba hair looks good around 250-350 dollors but afraid of being conned. Hair by V on instagram looks so good but pricey.
