Help!!! Going to a "dinner dance" with dh's work at the end of the month. Nice but not grand hotel in the Midlands. What on earth do I wear??? Can't wear heels so a dress is out really. Wtf do people wear to these things? I'm 5ft tall, size 16, big bust, really dislike my arms and legs.

Dress and ballet flats is pretty forgiving and easy to move in. Get something that’ll move nicely as you dance and isn’t too hot

Exactly as @Tiredofwhataboutery says. I was at a dinner dance recently and and a woman wore a fairly straight maxi dress (happened to be in black) and silver ballet pumps - she looked great, seemed really comfortable and was able to hold herself well as she wasn't wobbling around on heels. The maxi was not that dressy and she looked entirely appropriate. it was an odd dress code as it ranged from white tie to cocktail dress according to rank and she could have fitted into any group.

If you want to wear trousers, choose velvet if you have some, or something loose and flowy, with a sparkly or silky top.

Investing in good velvet trousers is a good idea. They never seem to go out of style, and can be great for unknown dress codes.

If you can't wear a skirt, I think you can wear a pair of tight blue jeans and a off-the-shoulder white short-sleeved top. This way, it's both casual and not too casual.
