Make up, lost my bag, need to started again from scratch

I left my entire make up bag on holiday. Everything.
To be fair it hasn't been properly overhauled for years. Just replacing bits and pieces, the odd advent mini, skipping primer.

I'm 52, it was mostly Bare Minerals so will probably start there.

And how much it going to cost me ! Terrifying. The brushes alone.

I have trinny bff, two eyeshadows, mascara, blusher, lipstick and lipgloss. I mean I have loads more stuff but they are the only things I use now day to day. You could probably spend £100 ish and have a full set of makeup.

janehopper · 31/10/2025 16:16

Also commiserations, losing my make up bag is second only to losing my phone! I forgot to take it on holiday one year in my twenties, it was dreadful as it was quite a remote location and I couldn't easily buy make up.

AYU brushes are amazing, reasonable and last years and are the only ones which wash up well. I like Real Techniques but they don't wash well ime.

jeaux90 · 31/10/2025 16:25

Well usually you get a brush with things like Bare Minerals, I use English Mineral makeup company and they send the brush with everything you buy from them. I prefer their stuff to BM. (But I’m 54 and mid post meno allergy skin)

Get samples or buy travel sizes of what looks appealing or you'd like to try, then full size the products that you love. This has saved me from some purchases I would have regretted.

Ugh to losing your brushes. The lower cost brush lines have some pretty nice brushes, I'm spoiled by some Japanese brushes but a recent Elf brush purchase was much better than expected.

Oh that is both terrible and fabulous to start again.

How about making a list of what you regularly used? I have lots of eye shadows but in reality I only use two regularly, I have an insane number of lipsticks but wear the same two colours most of the time and one vampy red for special occasions.

I have run through most of the emotions.
The post menopausal, do I give a fuck.
The dawning realisation I will miss even just the bag which has been everywhere and held just the right amount.
The hell yes I will spend, spend, spend
The how much!
And did I really need that anyway when I only bothered with
And the does that really suit me anymore, am I just stuck in 2012

Travel minis - great idea
Don't mind spending if it will build a good collection and make me feel great.

We have a Space NK, small John Lewis, large Boots near us. Will have to pluck up courage and brave the make up counters. I will be very vulnerable to a 50 something, natural look, sort me out kind of sales person.

Try vinted for brushes. I've sold sets from edits really easily (and cheaply).

Norugratsatall · 31/10/2025 17:30

Christmas list OP! Perfect timing really…..

pottylolly · 31/10/2025 17:32

I would start again based on your current skin. Go to make up counters, get samples, makeovers etc

Tryingatleast · 31/10/2025 17:33

I’d say hopefully a gift set might cover you for some of it given it’s nearly Christmas gift season

Tusktusk · 31/10/2025 17:53

I bought the baked starter kit from Laura Geller recently. It has a bare minerals type of foundation, a very decent multi use brush and a bronzer, blush, 3 eyeshadows and 2 highlighters. The only extra I need is something for my lips. It was around £50. I really like it.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/10/2025 17:55

How annoying!

It definitely gives you a chance to hone it back to holy grails in the first instance.

Mine would be:
Nars tinted moisturiser
Estée Lauder Futurist foundation for when I want more coverage
Mac Teddy eyeliner
A Mac dark brown eyeshadow pot
Benefit Rollerlash mascara
Nars cream blush in Orgasm (this has replaced Benefit Dandelion and a Milk one recently, both of which weren't working on my older, drier skin)
Chanel red lipstick in a really moisturising format which I've forgotten the name of
