Should new Dr Martens look like this?

I haven't had DMs for years so can't remember what they're like really. Bought these in the sale and I really like them but the leather is already really patchy in colour, when I pressed the toe to see how they fit me it left a light colour mark on the leather. Is this normal? I know they're supposed to be weathered etc but don't want to keep them if they're defective somehow.

Are they genuine? The stitching looks a bit shite. The leather looks scuffed

Iggityziggety · 28/10/2025 15:50

They came from the genuine Dr martens website. They do look scuffed tbh but new otherwise. Not sure if they should be like that having seen how easily they mark myself.

I think it’s the type of leather rather then bad quality

MYOB12 · 28/10/2025 16:04

They look like they’ve been tried on a few times. Personally I’d send them back. Or, if you can afford it, order a second pair to see what they are like. If they are the same it could just be they are easily ‘weathered’ and that’s how they are.

They’re nubuck - it marks easily.

Iggityziggety · 28/10/2025 16:11

Thanks guys, figured it's the type of leather but it probably shows more in the tan colour. Sold out in that colour otherwise I'd get a second pair to compare.

I’m sure I read somewhere that there are two types of Dr Ms… one still made in the UK and one mass made somewhere else and the former is better quality. I could be wrong.

Iggityziggety · 28/10/2025 16:27

I think they hardly make any in the UK now, I saw on the website some are highlighted as made in the UK so the default is obviously now to outsource. I wouldn't pay full price for them lets put it that way!

That matte, natural tan leather is supposed to wear naturally and look lived-in straight away. It’s not the quality of the leather, it’s just the style you’ve chosen.

Ohdearwhatnow4 · 28/10/2025 18:22

Id reccomend putting a protector spray on them.

When DM moved to China, a lot of the staff bought out the factory, and started Solovair. Less fashion focused, genuine high quality, uk made boots.

Thanks for this, I've been looking for some new boots

UpMyself · 28/10/2025 18:37

@Hayley1256 , I have several pairs. Check the size guide carefully before ordering - the unisex ones tend to be generous.

I agree. I'd return them.

Iggityziggety · 28/10/2025 19:19

Lanx are also a good alternative, used to have a pair and they're very well made and comfortable but out of my price range these days

Yes this is what I was thinking , it loos great if it's treated with extreme care and brushed in the right direction with a very soft brush but it's absolute bugger to keep them looking good
