Is there a way to help hair that tangles?

DD has beautiful think hair but it’s so fine. She loves having long hair but it mats and tangles so easily. Swimming is a nightmare. She lives in plaits. But even the slightest wind or bit of chlorine and it’s a mass of tangles that take hours to brush out. I’ve tried every detangling solution and brush I can find.
Please help - where are we going wrong? I have thin flat hair so never had this problem!

Try combing it whilst you have conditioner on it and not brushing it.

We trim the ends every couple of months - but it’s mostly the nape of her neck where the tangles appear - where her hair rubs against coats and clothes.

Don’t put conditioner on before going in the pool - this is terrible for the water quality and if everyone did it, it would make it really scummy. With my dd it helped to brush it through properly at least four times a day and replait. We also put a bit of hair wax of hairspray on the parts that rubbed on her clothes.

Hat goes over it.

This, curly hair needs lots of moisture so after shampooing, put conditioner on, comb the tangles out and scrunch in thr conditoner. Use a t-shirt to gentle dry her hair but don't brush whilst dry. My daughter has curly hair and this how I manage it with a curly hair specialist hairdresser for three monthly cuts.

It still gets in the water.

The pool water is manky anyway. Dead skin cells, hairs, plasters, ...

Apply jojoba oil or similar (coconut, olive) directly to the places it tangles badly and then comb gently. You can shampoo afterwards to reduce excess oil left on the hair, or just tie it back to let the oil sink on. It will look a bit greasy on those spots but if you are plaiting it isn't that noticeable.

Try products for afro hair, thats the only thing that worked on my hair as a child.

Revlon equwave is the professional job for this, my daughter s long hair is so fine and an absolute matted mess if we don’t use this

enidblythe · 11/11/2025 00:15

for swimming

put some cheap conditioner/ or if you have it coconut oil or Aragan oil into hair lengths before putting swim cap on (for long hair use one cloth cap first then a second silicone cap )

this protects hair while swimming and the chlorine doesn’t have as much effect.

StarlightLady · 11/11/2025 06:20

Try combing it with an Afro comb followed by a brush while the conditioner is still on.

Another vote for revlon equave. It's fantastic and smells nice. I spent an hour detangling dds hair last week after swimming. It was a mess. Couldn't have done it without the spray.

She needs to have it professionally trimmed every 6 weeks.

I have very fine hair. And until recently I had loads of it (sadly thyroid and Perimenopause have wreaked havoc on my tresses)
any wind or swimming would leave it a mess.

until I had it cut regularly.

scrappy ends catch more easily and therefor the hair more easily knots.

So. Best advice: have a little trim every 6 weeks and check with the hairdresser she is issuing the right products for her hair.

Thanks so much. Is it still taking an hour after every swim even with this stuff?

No it's great once you keep on top of the tangles. Due to illness in the house standards slipped for a week and her hair got out of control. It's normally washed twice a week and this works really well to keep it tangle free.
