I never wear make-up, but hate my rosy red complexion. I'm about to attach a pic to my profile thingymajiggy and was wondering if someone could help me with what I should buy and use. I have to say that I really am a make-up virgin. My mum never wore it so I never really got the gist of it.

Have you considered going into a Dept store to get a 'make over'- if you like it they will suggest which products to use.

goingslowlymad · 05/06/2008 21:38

I have thought about it emma. This is going to sound ridiculous but I worry that they will think I am really chavvy and not really show me properly because they will think I'm not going to buy anything.

pics are now on profile I hope.

feeling really daft now for not knowing how to use make up

OP posts:
JackieNo · 05/06/2008 21:59

Don't feel daft - you're definitely not alone. But I don't think you've made your profile public - can't see it.

goingslowlymad · 05/06/2008 22:01

oh [hmmm] will see what I can do. Thanks for replying though

OP posts:
goingslowlymad · 05/06/2008 22:03

think I have fixed it?

I was going to suggest maybe trying some mineral makeup - it can give a very natural looking coverage, and doesn't feel caked on, in the way that some foundations can. What sort of skin do you have? Dry, normal, oily, combination? Maybe some tinted moisturiser, as it's easier to apply than normal cream foundation.

JackieNo · 05/06/2008 22:05

Sorry- still can't see it.

Hova · 05/06/2008 22:07

I am rosy of complexion and when younger used to try to cover it up with really thick moisturiser, but now I just use:

tinted moisturiser - if you don't want to shell out £££ then the boots no 7 one is good. altho not cheap cheap - think it was £13.

spend the most money on face stuff (tinted moisturiser/foundation/concealer if you want it), the body shop make up is nice middle priced and i think they do make-overs too. I think it is best to be really specific when you get somebody at a counter to do your make-up: tell them you want to look natural, and to be able to do it quickly and it should be ok!

and then if you are an utter make-up virgin, there are some good books: bobbi brown one is good, you might be able to get it from the library?

At the bottom of the profile page, where you fill in the details, there's an option to make it visible - the box has 'no' or 'visible to all mumsnetters' or similar in it.

Easywriter · 05/06/2008 22:08

You haven't fixed it GSM.

Try a makeup base that's green, yes green! It takes the edge of the redness, then you can apply foundation over the top.

You should perhaps visit the doctor as you may have rosacea which may account for the redness and they may be able to treat it, which would obviously be better than covering it (in the longterm).

Hope this helps.
(Get yer photo up!)

Hova · 05/06/2008 22:08

not MOISTURISER - Foundation! I used to cover it up with really thick foundation - from rimmel. was grim

fishie · 05/06/2008 22:08

i don't wear foundation because i hate the feel of it. although apparently it is good because it protects the skin from sun. i have been wearing a bit of mineral foundation because it is light, like powder.

are you really red or maybe you aren't wearing the right colours? clothes etc not just foundation.

goingslowlymad · 05/06/2008 22:09

grrr, what am I doing wrong lol.

My skin is normal I'd say. Not prone to spots, a bit shiney in mornings (so I put a bit of baby powder on it to matt it a bit then wipe it off )

Will attempt this profile thing again

I second going to one of the dept store counters - if you feel like they're not taking you seriously then go to a different counter! My sil works on one of those counters and her and her friends are lovely. If they didn't show people properly they wouldn't buy anyway if it didn't look good!

JackieNo · 05/06/2008 22:10

I've used the Lily Lolo mineral makeup, which has a powder called 'blush away' which is green (you need to hover over the relevant one to see the details for it). Works for my rather redness prone face. But I think mineral makeup generally better for oily or combination skins - not always so good for dry ones.

Easywriter · 05/06/2008 22:11

You can always cheat with foundation application by just adding a bit to your moisturiser, then applying. It's then as light as the moisturiser you use.

flibertyplus2 · 05/06/2008 22:17

Are you going into my mumsnet - Set up public profile? you then need to go down to the very bottom and select 'Visible to all Mumsnetters" and click Save.

If you're already doing that - I've no idea!

goingslowlymad · 05/06/2008 22:17

have sorted the profile shatsit now I hope

Thanks for teh advice everyone. I'll make (mental) notes. I'm going out tomorrow evening and want to look less of a plain Jane

OP posts:
goingslowlymad · 05/06/2008 22:18

fliberty, I realised I had added the pics to the wrong profile. I'd put in a different email address so they weren't added to this name. Hope I have done it right this time. That'll teach me for using multiple email addresses

OP posts:
goingslowlymad · 05/06/2008 22:19

the shatsit in previous post should have said whatsit btw. Just in case you were wondering lol

OP posts:
JackieNo · 05/06/2008 22:20

Yes - it's worked. Looks like the redness is mostly on your cheeks. Lovely skin though .

harpomarx · 05/06/2008 22:20

I can see you,, GSM!

you don't look rosy! just nice rosy cheeks, fresh complexion - probably from not clogging your pores up with make up for years...

I second mineral make up - Mac's mineralize powder is really good.

goingslowlymad · 05/06/2008 22:20

Easywriter, is it shameful to admit I NEVER use a moisturiser? I guess I should start or am going to wind up as a wrinkled ol' prune ;)
