Eyebrows help - sparse and going grey!

ChocolateHazlenutButter · 26/10/2025 19:01

I’ve never had very thick eyebrows and have always maintained them with plucking or sometimes threading and using some eyebrow pencil. Now in my late 40s they’re a lot sparser and annoyingly I’m now getting several long brow hairs that are much lighter (in denial but must be silver!) and stick out. They’re like my dad’s eyebrows 😑

I plucked a few out yesterday that were particularly long but noticed after doing my makeup that there must be some more light ones as i could still see them through the eyebrow pencil. I don’t have a huge amount of grey hair but clearly my eyebrows are going first.

any ideas for the best solutions? I’ve never tinted them as I react to eyelash tint (but not hair dye) but I’m guessing tinting wouldn’t cover these new light ones anyway. What else can I try?

I had mine tinted but didn't like the result- too dark to begin with them it faded too fast and I don't like going to so one other than a hairdresser for beauty treatments.

Maybelline Super Fluff is a great brow mascara.

Browblade is really good too and easy to use.

I use an Anastasia Beverley Hills brow pencil thing in taupe as I am grey now and also getting sparse (I blame being teen of the 90’s). On top of that I use a wax thing called Soap Brows, too.

I use an eyebrow serum that encourages individual hair growth, which is effective but the hairs were still short and fairly pale. I started taking collagen for my joints and was surprised to see an impact on my brows - much longer and darker within a couple of weeks. It was very noticeable - I was talking to my daughter on a video call and she asked if I’d dyed them.

ChocolateHazlenutButter · 26/10/2025 20:33

A few things to check out, thanks. Interesting about the collagen helping your eyebrows appear darker. I’d been wondering about something to promote grow the bit don’t want lots more long silver ones!

Apparently beard dye is great for eyebrows!

Ooh! which collagen may I ask?

I have a few grey hairs in my eyebrows which I dye at home. It works really well.

My natural brows are patheticly thin and very pale. This has been a life changer for me. Quick and easy to apply and only has to be done every 2 to 3 weeks.

Elf do a great waterproof eyebrow pencil in 6 colours, including grey, blonde and taupe. It’s £5 and brilliant, has a spooly on the other end so you can brush it through your brows to blend in, best I’ve ever used, doesn’t make me look angry!

You really must stop plucking out brow hairs just because you don’t like their colour, @@ChocolateHazlenutButter - you’ll end up with none!

Spend a bit of time investigating specialist brow salons in your area and try to find one you get on with. There is sure to be a colouring process that works for you.

If you insist on a DIY approach you’ll have to spend a few months experimenting with different colouring options. Start here:

But you should really get the shaping and trimming done by an expert.

And stop pulling your eyebrows out.

I use this about every four weeks. Very effective for white/grey hairs and overall looking more groomed.

Would love to find a home laminating kit for that smoothed, straightened eye brow look. Often brows look sparse or straggly because they are very bent and curved. Laminating sorts that out. Has anyone had success with laminating at home?

I had this issue. Then I had to have chemo for cancer and got them microbladed. Now chemo is over and they’ve grown back, I have to say that the microblading is one of the best things I have done - I’ll keep it up. I used Karen Betts for my treatment.

myladyjane · 27/10/2025 08:28

I just used maybelline eye tattoo to try to help with this. I have a few grey hairs which grow fast and stick out. I am a regular tinter using dyelure but it’s not cutting the mustard any more.

well my advice is don’t. Before I had brown eyebrows with quite a few coarse grey hairs coming out at angles. Now I have ginger eyebrows with coarse hair coming out at angles. Total fail (this was medium brown).

I use this too and it is brilliant, plus you use so little that it lasts forever. Buy a pack of spoolies to apply. However you MUST do a patch test each and every time, especially if you have previously reacted to eyelash tint. You might be allergic to PPD.

I take minoxidil from Hair & Me and one of the unexpected benefits has been a significant increase in eyebrow growth. Mine grow like crazy now. I wish the effect was the same on my actual hairline but sadly it seems to be doing a lot more for my eyebrows than the hair on my actual head so far 🙄😂

Thanks for all the suggestions; lots to look into. I’m intrigued about tinting but a bit wary after my reactions to eyelash tint. I would
definitely do a patch test but I appreciate the caution about doing it every single time - thanks @EgregiouslyOverdressed

oh @FourFiveEightNine you make a very good point about plucking out these long silver ones. I’m a bit hopeless with eyebrows and didn’t even think about the long- term impact 🤦‍♀️ They seem to just suddenly appear and stick straight out but I guess I’ll need to trim rather than pluck. Thank you.

I did wonder about something like micro blading but have seen so many terribly done examples that I have felt drawn to it. I don’t live in the UK so need to do some research on who’s good with brows here.

You could ask salon to do a patch test and see if you would react to brow dye

You need to add a dot of grey dye to remove the ginge colour when mixing up the dye so small amount of brown small ampunt of grey mixed together gets a much better colour.

FourFiveEightNine · 27/10/2025 11:42

You don’t ask a salon to do a patch test.

You run away very fast from any that doesn’t insist on you having one 48 hours in advance. Every time.
