The Perfect Coat

Hello,

I'm looking for a new autumn/winter coat. If I describe myself/lifestyle as well.

I'm size 14 in coats normally. I like a bit of space. I'm nearly 50 but look much younger. I'm only 5ft 3" inch so long coats are no good really. I don't want a black/grey/navy coat as they're so dull and i'm out and about in the dark sometimes.

I get up and catch an early morning bus at 7.15am. My bus journey is between 30 to 40 mins long. I don't drive. So I'd like a coat that can cope with weird British weather especially when it rains suddenly. Have been caught short before and got drenched. Will only use an umbrella if I have to, as there's nowhere to put a wet brolly on the bus. My walk to/from the bus stop is about 5 mins at each end. Sometimes as with public transport, there's a bit of waiting around. Luckily both bus stops are under cover as sometimes I take an afternoon bus instead of morning.

I like to be warm but not too warm as the bus can be warm inside.

I like a hooded coat. I don't like the A line style that flares out at the bottom as I've had them before and its drafty. I'm straight up and down bodyshape wise. Traditional rain coats seem so rubbery and make me too hot. I would ideally like the coat to cover my bum as I don't want a cold wet bum. I appear to be a fussy bugger but really i'm not.

That's about it really. No dog walking involved as I have a cat only.

Thanks very much.

I am 5’4 and have a petite Seasalt Janelle. Mine is a dusky blue bought last year but I think they do different colours each year. It may be longer than you are after but it is warm and waterproof (but not as warm as my puffer coat). I think it could be your ideal coat.

Thank you. I'll take a look.

I had a Columbia coat like this one for years, it was really good. Very straight up and down so it didn't have that 'I'm wearing my hiking coat look'. It was very waterproof and warm but I think they have similar ones with different levels of insulation

It's lovely but I think it says extremely warm. So probably not for me but thanks though.

I love Protected Species coats. I have the trench style.

What’s your budget? Didriksons do lovely quality ones. I have this in black and haven’t found it super hot - I’m wearing it in autumn temperatures. It’s waterproof and the fur on the hood is removable if that’s not your thing: https://www.blacks.co.uk/19595333/didriksons-womens-erika-parka-19595333

Protected species .

I got a great one from Tescos, sadly the colour choices aren’t what you’re after but I’ve worn it for 3 consecutive days now in these down pours and I can’t recommend it highly enough for £59.50

I’ve got a wide brimmed rain hat which I keep in my coat pocket and it’s changed my life! Much better than an umbrella.

I was also going to say Didrikson. They are so good. There are always some on sale somewhere.

I think if you want to be stylish, then a wool coat or trench with a hat looks much better. Put a small pop up umbrella in your bag as extra protection

OhDear111 · 26/10/2025 09:27

Obviously wool or wool blend doesn’t cope with rain so you are stuck with a rain coat. A trench is way more stylish than a Didrikson! They are always mentioned for rugby watching mums. However if you won’t use an umbrella you are stuck with a hooded coat and something rather boring. M&S and Seasalt as cheaper than Didrikson and just as good.
