Grey blending

Hi
I started my grey blending journey in July. Loved how it looked. I’m now 3 months in and obviously have root growth and have my next appointment next month.
Just wondering what to expect at my next appointment, as I obviously don’t want the same else that would set me back 4 months, and my aim is to stop colouring my hair. Anyone have any experience please.

What colour is your coloured hair ?? If it’s light I’d leave it because it will fade very quickly. If it’s dark ( as mine was ) I’d get as much cut off as you can bear and if you can’t live with the badger effect then consider cool coloured lowlights on your grey part .

I didnt blend at all . I grew my silver until it was the right length for a pixie cut and then dived straight in .

I’m a brunette but had light highlights done. Considering I’m 14 weeks in it’s not too bad but is noticeable growth.

I was a very dark brunette and I would advise against any more highlights. I have been an admin on a silver hair Facebook group for about 10 years . Over those years one of the main things I’ve learnt is that whenever you have bleach on the hair it will inevitably turn yellow . Then you end up having to use toners to try to mask the yellow. Having never tried to lighten my hair I had no idea about that . I’ve seen so many highlights and every single time they went yellow . The more successful blends I’ve seen came from lowlights through the new silver into the dark hair . Honestly truly the least damaging and ultimately faster way to full grey is cold turkey .

Obviously I understand that cold turkey just isn’t an option for some people. It does take some doing when suddenly everyone in your life discovers an interest in your head 😊

Is the term "grey blending journey" another way of saying "bleaching and/or dyeing hair to cover grey"?

This is very sound advice!

currently growing out terrible OTT highlights from my old hairdresser that went yellow.

New hairdresser is occasionally breaking it up with cool dark lowlights and regular toners. Plus the occasional baby light but lifted very light so it doesn’t go brassy (maybe he’s putting these around the silver bits to make them look more deliberate - somehow they are not going warm like my old highlights).

but wish I’d stayed away from the bleach to begin with as the highlights have set me back years of more regrowth

No it’s about blending your grey in so it can grow out without a harsh line

EmeraldRoulette · 21/10/2025 20:18

@Fedupwithneighbours thank you

I think this is what people are advising me to do, but I'm not sure it's a good idea. It seems like a lot of expensive hassle which I'm not prepared to keep up for years and years. My hair is basically black so the grey looks awful, but I don't know what to do that isn't going to cause issues later.

Sorry @Legofan70 as you were. I was just curious. I keep hoping someone can produce a miracle solution for me 😂

Vicliz24 · 21/10/2025 20:22

@EmeraldRoulette . Yes that’s exactly the experience I’ve seen happen so many times . Having always been very dark brunette I had no idea about how bleach worked really. Since joining my group when I started my grow out 11 years ago I’ve seen it so often. I see people getting the whole grey transformation on social media but you never see them going forward from that initial amazing point .

Fedupwithneighbours · 21/10/2025 20:28

If I had my time again, I think I would have just gone for a balayage then you can chop the ends off if they go brassy, maybe with some of these magic non brassy baby lights my new hairdresser manages to do!
Essentially I should have switched hairdressers sooner, but you live and learn!

Thank you. Could you please send a link to your group?

Yeah I am a brunette so grey growth shows, but I just want to stop colouring my hair. Wish I could go cold turkey but don’t think I can 🤣

There’s something called the parting method that’s meant to be good for brunettes- I haven’t tried it yet but watching with interest!

Vicliz24 · 22/10/2025 10:00

@Legofan70 I can’t send a link because it’s now a private group however you can still ask to join . Just answer the questions and it will be fine . It’s a mainly American group so do bear that in mind but it’s packed with information about how to achieve grey hair . It’s called the silver circle. If you can’t bear Americans it’s not the group to be in but there are lots of others on Facebook.
