Just that really.

I am early 50s and have some dark spots appeared on my quite pale skin. Products online have such contradictory reviews.

can anyone help with reliable recommendations please ? 🙏🏼

If the products sold for sunspots and ageing really worked, we’d all buy them and look like 21 year olds, so I am sceptical about all the creams and potions. Perhaps laser removal?

Someone must have something that works ?!

I've used the Simple '24 hour rest and reset' cream with success . It's about £4 in Asda but can also be twice that price in other supermarkets. Yes Tesco, I'm meaning you ! Definitely worth a try.

dermatica - hydroquinone and tretinoin

you need a prescription but they do it for you and it’s very cheap, always have offers on.

Are they reputable ? First time I have heard of them 🤷🏻‍♀️

I had success with alpha h glycolic lotion it did fade a brown spot sun damage on my cheek, I have been using cheaper ones in the last year or two and I must admit they haven't worked so I just brought another bottle of alpha h, I buy mine when its on offer from qvc.

ILoveLukeAlderton · 21/10/2025 18:18

The Caudelie dark spot serum has faded mine, not gone completely but better than they were.

doodlyfiddly · 21/10/2025 18:22

I've been using L'Oreal Paris Bright Reveal UV Fluid Tinted Glow Pearl SPF 50+ as a BB cream all summer and mine have faded away to practically nothing.
It has tended to be half price quite often too, so I've been stocking up.

Yes this is the only thing that really works. Dermatica or Skin and Me are companies that will prescribe these based on your photos. I think it is around £25 for a small tube of the product which they will sign you up for a subscription but you can cancel this, when I used it I didn’t need that much.

You will get a bit of skin peeling so best not to use within a week or so of an event and you also must use spf - winter is a good time to use it so you’re not worrying about being exposed to the sun.

There is also a skin system by Obagi that uses hydroquinone and tretinoin as well that I have used, this is very pricy (I think around £500) and quite a commitment to use the full system for several months, it does have excellent results though.

edit just to add the Obagi would only be worth it for if you had a lot of pigmentation, definitely go with Dermatica or Skin and Me if it’s just a few spots and you only need to use the product on those areas so will hardly need much.

I've tried just about everything - including laser - and nothing has worked.

Dermatica
La Roche Posay
Boots No7
The Ordinary
Caudalie
Elemis
Eucerin
Bioderma Pigmentbio

On the upside, my skin is in much better condition after all of these products!

Did you get the hydroquinone from Dermatica?

Sun damaged skin needs to be assessed by a doctor or dermatologist.

Tiggerwoods · 21/10/2025 19:18

Dermatica worked for me and my hyperpigmentation has virtually disappeared after 6 months. They will do a specific prescription for you, you just need to upload photos.

Also, not sure if it's still available but Fade Out creams also worked to a certain extent. I've had hyperpigmentation for years as the result of medication and living overseas for a while, but now religiously use SPF 50 on my face every day.

PearlsaSwinger · 21/10/2025 19:37

I used skin+me dark spot formula on prescription for months without much change. Also tried laser treatment around 6 years ago but in the end the spot came back bigger and better!
Earlier this year I had cryotherapy freezing treatment which looked awful for about a week but worked brilliantly.
I use a factor 50 tinted stick screen every day now just in that area.

MarxistMags · 21/10/2025 20:43

This is my before photo with a large brown mark on my face. It's gone now.

yes - I did get some online consultations to try different ratios of ingredients: hydroquinone, tret, azaelic acid, niacinimide.

Came here to say this. Very reputable, very effective. Cleared my melasma/sunspots within a few months after years of trying to sort them out with expensive creams etc that did nothing.

my dermatica cream comes in the post every month , easy easy and is an absolute game changer!

NameWithChange · 23/10/2025 11:38

I have settled on Dermatica as lots of good reviews.

I wish someone had shared a link with me! Here is mine if anyone would like:

Just to update - got really confusing and then bad Customer Service from Dermatica - personally I would not recommend them.

I had cryotherapy too and it was fab. £90 for three areas. I'd have it done in winter though in future.

Vaninees · 27/10/2025 11:58

Did anyone have cryotherapy done in London? I’d love a recommendation.

mine is worse than ever after using hydroquinone, for some people hq creates rebound pigmentation, thst happened to me.
