Moisturiser for face, suitable for eczema sufferer

DS25 has asked about what moisturiser he could use - he has eczema around his eyes. He is using Cerave body lotion currently on his face, but finds that it is stinging and wonders if he should use a specific face moisturiser, and if so, which ones are suitable for eczema sufferers.
Personally I use Aldi face creams or whatever is discounted in TK Maxx, but I don't have eczema, so can't really advise him from personal experience.
He's not looking for something medicated, just something very gentle.
Can anyone recommend anything?

Everyone's eczema is different. I use November, but he may have to test some out. Aveeno is ok too, or just aqueous cream.

JurassicPark4Eva · 20/10/2025 15:41

I'm using La Roche Posay Cicaplast for problems like this. Perhaps find a counter in a large Boots and ask for a few samples before buying it?

HalloweenVibe · 20/10/2025 15:46

I think it depends on his eczema. Has he seen a dermatologist and is it triggered by allergy or is it genetic? If he has eczema around his eyes, is it out in hives? If it is already, emollients don't work if he suffers from it badly. He might need a prescription from a dermatologist. Steriods aren't recommended for the face, and in England only dermatologist can prescribe Protopic.

I suffer from mild eczema and just use whatever I can find. It's about keeping the skin moisturised. DC has isomel gel, but the dermatologist recommends CeraVe. It's expensive and not available on the NHS and that's the only reason DC isn't using it.

HalloweenVibe · 20/10/2025 15:48

Oh just realised you mention cerave lotion. Have you tried the moisturising cream? That's what the dermotologist recommended.

murasaki · 20/10/2025 15:48

Non perfumed is the basic need.

murasaki · 20/10/2025 15:49

Just realised it's too late to edit my first post, nivea not November, obviously!

I agree with trying some sample sachets.

Hypochlorus acid spray - you get ones made for eyelids but I also spray it all over my face. Boots have one.

neleh87 · 20/10/2025 15:57

I went through a stage of having ezcema round my eye, it was very unpleasant and he has my sympathies. I found Avene eye contour cream cleared it up .

Frankiebaby123 · 20/10/2025 15:58

Aveeno soothing oat gel day moisturiser

Newname09 · 20/10/2025 16:02

Green people do a good range. No nasties/colour/perfume.
I also cured my eye eczema with a trip to a homeopath.

leli · 20/10/2025 16:03

Eczema around the eyes is horrible. Once sensitised virtually all products will sting. Plain vaseline (petroleum jelly) in the round blue tins was recommended by our oculist for my adult child to provide a moisture barrier. Was also prescribed Protopic. Ideally should get a dermatologist appointment .

Sorry - perfumed creams like Nivea are high risk for causing reactions I find.

RabbitsEatPancakes · 20/10/2025 16:07

I've had life long issues with full body eczema and after a nightmare with steroid overuse I'd advise he stay away from prescription creams.

Cleared my eyelid eczema up using SVR Palpebral Balm. All the ones mentioned made me react very badly- I've probably spent thousands on creams.

I also did probiotics, supplements and a body regime with hibiwash and hypochlorous acid- amazingly after 30years of medical treatments I've cleared it myself.

Look at moogoo website moogooskincare.co.uk
They have amazing products especially for eczema prone skin.

mouldedacrylic · 20/10/2025 16:11

If he has eczema around the eyes, he needs to treat that first. Has he seen a GP? A tiny amount of steroid cream should help, but used very sparingly as it thins the skin. He might also want to check if the skin's infected and get antibiotics if so. I find paraffin-based emollients are best for when my eczema gets very bad - Oilatum and Doublebase are good, they won't moisturise in the traditional sense but they will keep the skin soft and lubricated.

The Rhode skincare range is approved by the eczema society in America. It’s a lovely range

MiddleAgedDread · 20/10/2025 16:18

Another vote for Aveeno

donttellmewhaticantdo · 20/10/2025 16:19

Fat cow face cream. Its made with beef tallow and has no nasty chemicals. I've been using it for a few weeks now and my skin has improved a lot. I only use it at night though as it's a bit greasy.

TottenhamCake · 20/10/2025 16:26

Another vote for aveeno. I get the bigger one which is meant for the body sometimes, as its cheaper and lasts months.

I still get the odd bit round my eyes but i think that is due to my makeup.

Has he tried Vanicream (comes in both lotion and cream) or Aquaphor? My daughter also found Cerave stinging but has no problem with Vanicream and Aquaphor.

DelphiniumBlue · 22/10/2025 21:37

Thanks everyone. He's trying the Cerave facial cream, with Aveeno next on the list. He's had steroid cream from GP, but really doesn't want to keep using it on his face.

Baby Aveeno - he should probably see his GP though.

@DelphiniumBlue , not aqueous cream.

Aqueous cream: may cause skin irritation

May cause skin irritation, particularly in children with eczema, possibly due to sodium lauryl sulfate content.

E45 is good.

cinnamonbunlover · 22/10/2025 22:39

I found Eucerin ATO control the best for a flare up. I have tried a lot for eczema and react to a lot during the winter. They are so expensive though. The Aldi day cream is good too, as is the Lidl cien intense. Depends on his skin texture too.
Avoid paraffin.

I love dr jart ceramidin cream.

the best ingredients are cica to soothe and ceramides to build the barrier. Simple rich repair cream is good it has both

the avene cicafalate is good for flare up

j haven’t tried it but next to try is the boots eczema cream with ectoin.

good luck!
