What are your winter staples?

I’m lucky enough to live in the southwest where our winters are usually 10 degrees and rainy. A jumper with a long sleeved top under it and a rain coat usually suffices. But im off on a couple of wintery trips this winter and have nothing in my wardrobe that’ll really do. My jumpers are pretty flimsy and I don’t have any thermals.

any recommendations would be appreciated!

Hello new best friend, Smilla's sense of snow is one of my absolute favourite books ever, which is odd because I don't much love the author's other stuff. Maybe it's the clothes!

Now padded skirts ... there are some nice looking ones out there, but much harder to find. The one us middle-aged mumsy types wear is this kind https://www.stadium.se/sport/outdoor/klader/139657001/dobsom.comfort-skirt.black It's definitely a polarising garment. When my daughters were in their early 20s I offered them the loan of mine when they were going out and it was very cold (sure it'll fold up small, you can whip it off in the queue and no-one will see you) and they r-e-f-u-s-e-d. They're nearing their 30s now, I'm waiting for them to come home and say "actually...".

You don't wear it to be fashionable, but it's an awful handy thing to avoid thermals under your trousers and/or help you wear skirts easier.

Ahhhh hey book friend!! 🤣❣️ I only tried A History of Danish Dreams but that wasn't for me - I don't actually know if he's written much else? What are your other book faves?? I've just loved The Unwilding by Marina Kemp.

I LOVE the padded skirt - making me feel warmer just looking at it...

I spend Christmas with my extended family in a country with approx -20/-25 every December.

I don't wear anything special. Hate thermals, layers and all that crap - stuffy and uncomfortable, never wore them in my life. I wear a normal long coat (pure wool coat or a teddy coat), woolen jumper and jeans. Also knitted dresses or any wintery dresses with normal opaque tights (not fleecy, hate them). Thick socks (wool or not), chunky boots like Docs or whatever. A scarf. Never wear hats/beanies and rarely gloves. That's it.

That said, I'm not 'outdoorsy' in any way, hate hiking, nature and all that. We visit Christmas markets, cities, etc.

I've read the Susan one and the one called Borderliners in English. The Susan one is ok - I think in that one and in Smilla he writes women quite well, which is unusual for a man? But then he pissed all over that in Borderliners.

Currently read way too little, sadly. But Smilla to me is weirdly connected to The Left Hand of Darkness by Leguin - the only thing they have in common is winter but there we are.

Skirt isn't that warm, but it's just that bit extra that makes things easier!

My DS bought me a Cashmere Snood last Autumn and I love it. I wear it indoors sometimes as its just so cosy. I find I'm always so much warmer in a scarf even a light cotton one.
