Eye lash tint

Hi. I had my eye lashes tinted about 10 days ago and notice this morning when I got out the shower they are almost non existent again. I am extremely fair haired. The last couple of times I’ve had them done they’ve not lasted very long and it’s getting quite expensive. My beautician is using the same dye and the process hasn’t changed.
Has anyone any experience of DIY-ing eye lashes and what products would you recommend, or a mascara that builds up lasting colour? Rimmel do one but not sure if it’s a gimmick. Any recommendations please? X

I’m in my 60s and have invisibly pale lashes and brows that I’ve dyed myself since I was a teenager. I use refectocil or strictly professional dye and developer that I get from eBay. I find it lasts quite well.

I do the exact same but my hairdresser gets it from Sally’s for me. Blue/black on lashes, light brown on brows.

I've done mine myself for years. I use refectocil, you need to buy the dye in the colour you want and the developer. Its really easy to do and I like to use fine interdental brush to apply.

You'll probably get loads of people recommending Eylure/Dylash which are for the mass market but Refectocil and Strictly Professional are for professional use (my beauty therapist uses Refectocil) and contain over 4 times the amount of product as the Eylure/Dylash kits for only a couple of pounds more.

Also, if it has been a while since I've dyed my lashes, I triple dye them. So first time I apply to the upper side of my lashes, wait and remove; apply to the underside of my lashes, wait and remove; final time I concentrate of my roots, wait and remove.

thats helpful thank you. I shall go and look for refectocil.

@LuffyMe What a great idea to use an interdental brush for application, definitely going to try that!

Can I just check please that these would be the right products to order?

Yes - but if you like a super dark lash blue/black works best. I initially got a “kit” which came with a tiny tint bowl and little paintbrush I think, you will need something to mix it in and apply with. I buy disposable mascara spoolies which I use for the lengths and use the paintbrush for the roots. PP’s tip to use a Tepe brush is a great idea!

Yes, that's right. I use the black but I've also used the blue/black too, I can't tell the difference. I've used both the liquid and the creme developer and there's nothing between them (except different quantities).

I did buy a dappen dish to mix it in but you could use an egg cup instead.

whataboutallofthis · 19/10/2025 13:35

Thank you. I’ll try black to start with and if successful move to blue black!

I wouldn't hold your breath! I got my last tube in March 2024 and even with fortlightly/monthly dying, I'm not even half way through!

The instructions tell you to measure out 2cm of the dye but I only do 1cm and this is enough even if I triple dye and there's still wastage. You just have to remember to halve the quantity of the developer (the recommended number of drops differs if you're using the liquid or the cream).

Good luck!! Just think of all the time and money you're saving by doing it yourself!

I’ve used Eyelure several times but there was hardly any effect. Dyeing my lashes is a waste of time for me as my eyelashes are very short and fine. I need a thick volumising mascara or my eyelashes don’t notice at all.

Hello

I get my eyelashes tinted, but mainly for the bottom lashes as I still wear mascara but not on the bottom. The result is really variable. This time I can hardly see it on the bottom lashes.

Do those of you who do it at home dye the bottom lashes as well? Wondering if I should try it

thedogdaysareover51 · 19/10/2025 16:21

I have used Refectocil and developer at home for my eyebrows and lashes since covid shut all the beauticians. It’s really good. When I do my eyelashes I do top and bottom and just keep my eyes open. I keep it on for about half an hour and just watch tv while it develops so it’s super convenient. Lasts for a while too.

Yean, I do. But my lower lash line doesn't have the same density as my upper, so I find it harder and messier. Plus some of the ones close to the inner corners of my eye don't really project very much.

Day to day I wear Collection clear mascara on my lower lashes (and brows) to give better definition.

Refectocil dye and oxidant instructions for use

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 28/10/2025 21:38

Squeeze out about 2cm of dye, then add in around five drops of liquid. Mix. You want it to be the consistency of ketchup. Add more liquid if needed, but not too much, go steady - if it’s too “wet” it won’t stick and also more likely to be sting-y. If you’re doing lashes put Vaseline round your eye to prevent staining, paint on your tint, and leave it for ten minutes. Remove it with a damp cotton pad.

As a first timer you could break it up and do one eye at a time, or even do one eye lower lashes, then upper, then repeat on the other eye. I just whack both on but have been at it for years!

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 28/10/2025 21:38

Is there definitely no leaflet in the box with the tube?

The grey box has the safety info in it

@Judystilldreamsofhorses thank you. @GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut no nothing. Bought from Amazon (not as a kit) and what arrived is just what is in my photo. No instructions

I always do my lower and upper lashes separately as that seems to stop it getting in my eyes - need a second or third go of it’s been a while but the overall process only takes half an hour or so.

Mine are fair/greying now and I really need to do it every couple weeks along with my brows to give my face a bit of definition.

I did my brows with black instead of brown by mistake once and rubbed it off quick when I realised but it actually looked better, so do that now and only leave it on a few minutes - saves me buying the 2 shades.

Not sure if that would work with blue-black though.

LuffyMe · 30/10/2025 11:07

Here's a link to the Refectocil site. You have the liquid developer

Instructions (under the Application drop down). Also they've written 2 ? cm which initally I read as 27 !

You will likely get some in your eye with your first attempt, it will sting like mad and both your eyes will water. Be prepared to remove quickly, have wet cotton wool ready and an open bin for disposal. The dye stains badly, so protect your surfaces.

Zigzagmug · 30/10/2025 11:22

Is there any difference in the "risk" for the professional products?

I've been using the same home kit from Ebay for years. It's a bit stingy, but not as much as the salon one.
