Can a new hairdresser get it right first time?

My long term hairdresser has stopped work due to being unwell. I have never really been that content with my hair but she always got my fringe right so I was happy. I moved to another hairdresser but it's not working. She can't do my fringe and offers very little in terms of styling advice. I currently feel like my hair is wearing me.

I am 54. Have a fringe and wear glasses all the time. My hair is dark brown, no grey yet and I don't dye it. It's just touching my shoulders. The same length all the way round bar the front with a little layer to take the bluntness off for a softer look.

I am pondering a complete change and trying a hairdresser at a big salon in Edinburgh but I need guidance on my hair and what will
work. My hair is poker straight. My hair struggles to hold a style as it will inevitably just fall flat. I'd like to go shorter but I am worried about Lego head or looking like Edna from the Incredibles.

It is my general belief that hairdressers are 10 a penny but a good hairdresser is like rocking horse shit.

I have an excellent hairdresser, who got it right first time - I have a cows lick but like a thick full fringe and she spotted it when I first sat down and explained to me how she couldn't cut my fringe straight because it would look wonky, but that she'd have to cut and style everything then do my fringe last and by sight. She's never cut it wrong and now we don't even talk about my hair when I sit down, she just starts cutting 😂
I found her through recommendation. I'd moved to a new town, asked work colleagues, Mum's on the school playground and on the local Facebook group. And it was her salon that kept getting recommended. In your position, I would actually ask for a consultation with a few hairdressers before you book an appointment for them to do anything with your hair, so you have the opportunity to ask them questions and get a feel for the person.

Couldn’t agree more! I would probably allow one haircut where a new hairdresser didn’t quite ‘get’ my hair but that’s it. Take pics of what you like and expect a good HD to ask what it is you like about it, discuss how it’d work with your hair/face/willingness and ability to style etc.

Do you know someone with a good hairstyle that suits them and whose hair always looks good? Ask them where they get it done.

Friends all have long hair or short hair so no one that I can relate to hairstyle wise. We live in a rural commuting town so it’s generally the same hairdressers we all go to anyway.

Do any of them have nice hair?
I found a hairdresser by asking a colleague with a very good pixie cut that suited her face. I have long wavy hair.

The hairdresser cuts my hair in a way that my hair behaves, and I can wash it, stick a comb through it, and it's done.
I can sit in the chair and say 'do what you think best'.

I've had bad cuts from expensive salons and cheap ones.
The biggest problem for me is that the stylists tend to want to give me a straight style.

Was just about to try a different hairdresser purely based on price not going to bother now! We were messaging, and I sent her a pic of my hair and said my hair needs to be bleached to lift it. Which she disagreed with. I have had my hair coloured for years so am glad I mentioned and will stick with the one I usually go to
