Hair styler for pre-teen

I’m hoping the mumsnet style gurus can help me please by suggesting a hair styler for my 12 year old daughter. She has thick, long wavy hair which when dried naturally goes quite frizzy and knotty. I help her blow dry it once a week to make it smooth and more manageable.

For Christmas I’d like to get her a wet to dry styling tool which can straighten and smooth her hair, and she can hopefully do independently. I’m a bit clueless on the latest gadgets as I can do a good self blow dry after 30 years of practice!

Can anyone recommend a gadget which might be suitable? Budget quite open as it could be her main present- she never asks for much.

If there is scope to do curls/waves this could be useful in future, but at the moment she just wants to make it easy to brush.

thank you 🙂

hey! my hair is the exact same way. long post ahead sorry tried to condense.

first, I’d really recommend looking into a leave in conditioner/hair oil and what shampoo/conditioner she uses. since i’ve started using hair oil it’s been a game changer. i use the gisou hair oil and it lasts months, just a few drops on dry ends after i’ve showered and it means that for multiple days after showering brushing is sooo much quicker and my hair looks much nicer. unfortunately consumables like this have made the biggest difference in how manageable and nice my hair looks!

for tools, i use the revlon 1 step for drying/styling and i’ve loved it, but it can be quite damaging if you aren’t careful as it’s physically harsh on fragile wet hair strands and so can cause breakage & mechanical damage. i will say - i have split dye hair, half of it is natural, virgin hair and it hasn’t done really any recognisable damage on that side. it’s only really the side that’s been bleached that it’s damaged.

having said that i’ve loved it. there are some that look similar but slightly less… hard and plasticy after a quick google but ive no personal experience with them of course :). i cant hack blow drying my hair myself but i can use this very happily!

final note - my all time favourite product has to be the ColourWow dreamcoat - look it up it is fantastic for hair like your daughter sounds she has.

i think it’s a right of passage for hair like ours lol. i can remember the instyler wet to dry my mum got me for christmas when i was 13 lol, i loved that thing and can remember feeling soooo much better about my hair.

good luck!

Thank you @outfitrepeta thats so helpful. I just taken a look at the one step and it looks great. I like the price, as I would worry about spending too much on a tool she struggles to use.

Good point about products, I’ll pop some lovely hair oil in her stocking. I have dream coat, it’s amazing!

Really nice to hear you have happy memories of receiving a similar gift.

Try the revlon one step. The round one is amazing at smoothing and detangling and is so easy to use. Definitely use it with an oil or a spray like Beauty works 10 in 1 or the revlon magic flash 10 in 1

if you are out off by the fact it is called a volumiser they do a paddle style one.

shark do a similar one but has smoothing fins can be used on dry hair to refresh a style.

B&M had the Elle styler too for around f £25 which looks like a fake air wrap set and comes in a nice box
