Brand new leather jacket stinks, help!

KSNDBWIAB · 17/10/2025 23:33

I bought this 2 weeks ago and only managed to wear it once as it absolutely stinks. It's a weird singed hair-like smell. It's suede leather.

A quick Google search suggests dousing it in bicarb but I'm worried that will somehow damage the texture with it being suede.

I can't return it as stupidly I didn't keep the receipt 🙁

It has been 'airing out' to no avail.

Any help welcome, I love it and really want to wear if but can't possibly like this.

I bought a smelly coat a few years back and remember stuffing it with newspaper as the paper can absorb smell. I can't remember if it worked but I think it did as the coat doesn't smell anymore.

MultiFucktional · 18/10/2025 07:46

A bank statement showing the transaction would be proof of purchase for many retailers, especially as it’s unwearable, so not fit for purpose.

You could lie it in a sealed bin bag with a couple of open tubs of bicarb to absorb the odour, so no direct contact with the fabric.

Floisme · 18/10/2025 08:02

I once machine washed a second hand leather jacket because nothing else I had tried got rid of the smell. Some people will say you should never do it but It did the trick - got rid of smell - and the jacket was fine. Not sure I’d have risked it with a new jacket but then again, it sounds like you might have nothing to lose. But check your statutory rights first.

Nitgel · 18/10/2025 08:05

What sort of leather is it?

KickboxingWanker · 18/10/2025 09:05

With it being suede don’t wash it, it will likely go ‘slimey’.
A lot of suede items are pigskin which due to processing can have a strong chemical odour - do you have an airing cupboard that you can leave it in for a week or so? The smell should eventually fade.

AnchorWHAT · 18/10/2025 11:49

Peg it on the washing line or peg a hanger on and put it out on a breezy day

Britpopbaby · 18/10/2025 13:12

Pop it in a bag with an open food bag containing bicarb and leave for around a week. It’s worth a try.

PerformativeBewilderment · 18/10/2025 13:15

I had success with a stinky smoky item from Vinted by putting it in a ziplock bag with a few charcoal odour absorbing pouches. Folded, sealed, left it for a few days, all good

Daphnedot · 18/10/2025 13:48

Unpick it somewhere and take it back

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 18/10/2025 14:19

I agree with @MultiFucktional's post..

Also google the Consumer Rights Act 2015.
If you paid by Credit card, you should have some protection from them too, it will be on your providers website.

If no luck on the shop floor escalate with email to customer services.

But alternative is to ask a dry cleaner? They treat suede jackets.

No expert but it sounds like the suede wasn't properly cured?

Good luck

Don’t do this, it’s always glaringly obvious and they will just peg you as a scammer so will look out for you for future transactions.

Honeyoctoberr · 21/10/2025 23:00

I bought the very same jacket last week and it stinks so much, I'm taking it back tomorrow. It stank my whole bedroom so actually made me sick. I haven't wore it but will be taking back.

Newname09 · 21/10/2025 23:20

I had a similar jacket from new look once and couldn’t cope with the smell either. As someone else has said, I think it’s pig leather and it does have a distinctive smell. As it’s new, I don’t think the smell will get any better than say, if it was second hand and smelt of smoke or something.
ive heard of putting items in the freezer before to get rid of smells but not sure that’s ideal with suede. Also don’t spray it with anything as it’ll mark it.

I bought the same primark jacket as op last Friday and the smell is sickening just having it in my room- I have not even worn it yet, i can't imagine wear it with the smell.
I'm returning it today.
Yesterday I had it folded on my bed, the bedding especially the pillow smells so badly now by it, I had to grab another pillow last night.
Its a beautiful jacket, I was so happy I managed to get one as sold out but sadly impossible to use.
I have another real suede jacket, also new from different shop and has no unpleasant smell at all.
I guess this was cheaper produced, hence the lingering smell.
I don't know if ever would get better..

Op, just take it back and say about the smell, says it's so strong it makes you allergic to it. I know that real suede has scent but not like this, this is totally another level really..

I'm not sure if would work with it as its the suedes smell, probably not well treated as cheaply produced. Its not an acquired smell like from smoke, perfumes, dirt etc.

AbsentosaurusRex · 22/10/2025 09:31

I guess it’s dead animal smell?

Although I bought a wax jacket which isn’t dead animal, and it smells. Wish I’d never bought it, also can’t return it as no receipt.

@AbsentosaurusRex wax jackets always smell to begin with. Try airing outside.

Are you suggesting OP should deliberately damage the item and then claim a refund?

Honeyoctoberr · 22/10/2025 18:21

So I returned mine today, as soon I took out of the bag, the cashier was in clear shock, I told her about the smell, she said it's absolutely disgusting and said it won't go back on shop floor as must be faulty, she run to her colleagues to show it and they all were like Bleeee..

Other leather products don't smell like that. I have other suede clothing and bags, none has a such sickening disgusting smell like this one had.

KSNDBWIAB · 22/10/2025 22:41

Ah sorry to see that others here have the same issue. How on earth have these jackets made it onto the shop floor?!

I had mine in a sealed box with an open tub of bicarb for 2.5 days and it seemed to improve but the smell has come back.

Do we think it will be a waste of time taking it to a dry cleaner?

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 22/10/2025 23:34

Sounds like Primark must be aware of this as so many customers are returning it from the sounds of this thread at least.
Could you email customer services and have a screenshot of your statement, say that you've lost the receipt but you can't keep it as its not fit for purpose... and will they exchange it.
If you paid by Credit Card, they have a scheme to help you in these situation and I think Bank Debit cards do too but Credit cards have more protection.
I doubt the shop will want you complaining and your bank statement will show you purchased it on that date. Good luck x

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 22/10/2025 23:38

Or you could ring a specialist suede/leather dry cleaners like this one... and ask them what they recommend (even if its not in your area, they might give an opinion) maybe. Might be more than a usual dry cleaners but you could always ask. This one does postal for uk.
