Liquids in hand luggage?

Coming back from Corfu on Sunday and it’s back to the plastic bag, after just chucking it in at Birmingham.

I know lipstick and mascara are classed as liquids, but what about Bobbi Brown eyeshadow sticks? I can just chuck it all in my check in bag but I like to have a makeup bag in my cabin bag.

Anyone?

I've always got lipstick, mascara and any kind of stick past security, without it getting flagged for a check. I think you'd be fine.

Thanks

In the UK only Birmingham and (I think) Edinburgh have the new machines that scan without separating liquids of any sort.

It varies from airport to airport but generally anything you can smear is counted as a liquid. I'd treat all of those as liquids. I'm airline staff for reference.

Anything that drips, pours, sprays or smears should be in your liquids bag (if Corfu don't yet have the new scanners).

Manchester has them too.

18 UK airports have liquid scanners (although most still enforce the 100 ml rule) but that does not help the OP who is in Corfu.

If in doubt, just drop it in the clear bag. Having the wrong item in will not cause a problem. I always put nail clippers in the clear bag. Not a liquid obviously but it saves having you case opened by security to measure/check them.

I’ve literally never put mascara, lipstick, stick deodorant or any other kind of stick item in the liquid bag and I’ve never been stopped for it.

G5000 · 18/10/2025 07:50

I never bother putting tiny things like mascaras, lip glosses or eye gels in the bag. No issues and I fly very often.

AlPaccacino · 18/10/2025 13:21

Mixed answers then. And yes I know that the UK airports have the new scanners as I left there 9 days ago. The issue is Corfu.

I’m just going to chuck it in my checked in luggage and pop a lip balm in my plastic bag.

Just didn’t want to risk my suitcase being lost or damaged.

Recently ds2 got stopped at Manchester for having a lipstick in his jacket chest pocket. His gf had put it there a few weeks previous when they went out and she didnt take her handbag. I dont know if it was confiscated or not.

Heathrow definitely does as well, at T5 at least

Randomsabreur · 21/10/2025 07:53

All the UK airports I have been through (Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester except T3, Stansted and Bristol) have the new scanners. Edinburgh allows liquids up to 2L, the others don't except Birmingham.

Abroad is much more variable - bigger hub airports have the new scanners, most regional airports not so much, especially if primarily low cost hubs...
